Sold Under Sin: David Milch Caps His Television Masterpiece with "Deadwood: The Movie"

“We’re all of us haunted by our own fucking thoughts. So make friends with the ghost, it ain’t going fucking anywhere.”—Al Swearengen, Deadwood: the MovieSouth Dakota, 1876, in the wake of Custer’s folly: a mining camp whose most influential and conniving citizens hope to be annexed by the United States government as they machinate against each other in their unabating pursuits for more money, more power. It’s place is called Deadwood, a lawless, sordid camp inhabited by gold chasers and hoople heads, dope fiends and gunslingers, craven murderers and even a few honest, hard-working folk. Al Swearengen (Ian McShane), a pitiless saloon owner who sells sex and uses murder to eradicate threats of competition, one of the camp’s first settlers, is the unaccredited leader, but his surreptitious sovereignty is threatened by other scheming parties. ‘Deadwood’: Everything You Need to Know Before The Movie Premieres
[Editor’s note: The following contains spoilers for “Deadwood” Season 3.]

Deadwood,” creator David Milch’s revisionist Western depicting an emerging community in the hills of 1880s South Dakota, has often been the odd one out in HBO’s foundational pillars of TV’s golden age, having not had the outsized viewership of “The Sopranos” or the cult-turned-phenomenon rise of “The Wire.” That may be attributed to the show’s unexpected cancellation in 2006. Accounts vary on why exactly the show was axed — conflict between Milch and HBO being the most likely culprit, since the show was very expensive and Milch’s creative process usually involved extensive last-second rewrites.

But when the show concluded after three seasons, it was denied a proper ending, frustrating both audiences and the cast and crew.

That is what has haunted the series since its conclusion – the perception that since the final episode was not meant to be so, the series has always been unfinished,

Now the show is not only a utility player ranking in the top three highest-rated shows on the CW network, but it is also hitting its 300th-episode milestone amid revitalizing other areas of the television business, from international sales to merchandising.

“It has set the highest bar, and it really has to do with quality of consistent execution. This is a very, very dedicated and strong group of craftspeople,” says Peter Roth, president and Cco, Warner Bros. Television Group. “When you have that extraordinary alchemy of great writing and great acting, and you have leadership that is well-functioning and happy and thriving,
