Athanasiou was romantically linked to actor and drama theorist Antonin Artaud ("Theatre of Cruelty"). Extensive correspondence exists between the two (roughly the period 1923 to 1940), as evidenced by multiple sources (example: "Antonin Artaud Selected Writings" Library of Congress Catalog Number: 79-143303).
