Veronica Mars Review: Darkness Descends on Neptune in Hulu Revival

It feels like we're opening the door to old friends at the start of the Veronica Mars revival.

As networks around the world compete to capture lightning in a bottle, many of them are hoping to do it twice (or even more if we include film) with revivals and reboots.

But the longer a show has gestated in our good graces, the more difficult it becomes to burst through with a fresh perspective on well-known characters.

The Hulu series marks the third time Veronica Mars has defied the odds.

First, it was one of the series that made the leap from Upn to The CW when it was born laying to waste The WB and Upn. Then through the magic of crowdfunding, Veronica Mars the movie catered to fans everywhere by bringing her ten-year high school reunion to the big screen.

All This Has Happened Before: Remembering Battlestar Galactica

Ricky Church on Battlestar Galactica

In today’s climate of film and television, its pretty common for an old property to be rebooted or remade for a modern audience. The last several years have seen it done so many times with various series or films, from Batman, Lethal Weapon, Magnum P.I., The Jungle Book and Twin Peaks, reboots have been a dime and dozen and often not lived up to the original. But flashback to 2003 when they weren’t as common. One classic 1970s series was remade into something more serious and gritty, but with powerful characters, stories and themes. That show was Battlestar Galactica, which premiered with its miniseries back in 2003.

The original 70s series of Battlestar followed a ragtag group of humans on the verge of extinction after the Cylons, a race of robotic beings, launched a surprise attack on humanity and largely wiped out the population. The

Battlestar Galactica: 10 Storylines That Hurt The Series (And 10 That Saved It)

It’s not often that sci-fi reboots can outdo the original, especially in television. Star Trek: Discovery, for example, isn’t getting fans as excited as predecessors like Star Trek or Star Trek: The Next Generation. On the other hand, Jordan Peele’s updating of The Twilight Zone has adoring fans chomping at the bit for more. But no rebirth in the genre did quite as well on TV as the 2004 version of Battlestar Galactica. It not only lived up to the original 70’s cult classic – it outperformed it and by several light years.

The gritty drama centering on a nomadic fleet of humans facing extinction was one of the greatest space operas of all time. Powerhouse performances from the likes of Mary McDonnell and Edward James Olmos paved the way for the great drama conjured up by the show’s writers and producers. But as with all long-form series,

Mary McDonnell: Returning to TV!

Mary McDonnell is making her way back to the small screen!

TV Line is reporting that the former star of Major Crimes will appear on Hulu's upcoming revival of Veronica Mars.

She's on board to play the role of Jane, who is described as a "warm-hearted therapist."

There are no other details about the character at this stage, but still, it's great news to know that McDonnell is returning to the small screen.

Related: Veronica Mars: Which Villain Is Returning?

It will be a guest-starring role, but it has yet to be confirmed just how many episodes McDonnell will appear in.

Mary is probably most well-known for her starring role on TNT's Major Crimes, which wrapped after six seasons in January 2018.

The show was beloved by fans, but it was a casualty of a change in focus for the cabler's scripted series, and many fans were left unsatisfied with the ending.

Veronica Mars: Mary McDonnell Joins Hulu Revival in Mystery Role

Veronica Mars: Mary McDonnell Joins Hulu Revival in Mystery Role
It looks like someone in Neptune is about to get his/her head shrunk, courtesy of one Mary McDonnell.

TVLine has learned exclusively that the Battlestar Gallactica and Major Crimes vet is set to guest star in Hulu’s forthcoming Veronica Mars revival as Jane, a warm-hearted therapist.

A Hulu rep confirmed McDonnell’s casting, but declined to reveal the length of her stay or who — if anyone — her therapist character will be treating. (For those wondering, yes, this is the Veronica Mars tidbit I teased in my latest Ask Ausiello column.)

The eight-episode revival picks up five years after

20 Crazy Behind-The-Scenes Revelations About Donnie Darko

Donnie Darko is a 2001 movie that was written and directed by Richard Kelly. It follows Donnie (Jake Gyllenhaal) as he tries to navigate high school and life, only to discover that the world he lives in is not exactly what he thinks it is on the surface.

When the movie initially premiered, it didn't do well in theaters, largely due to its subject matter. It debuted just after 9/11 and featured a plane engine crashing into a house.

Eventually, the beautifully intriguing and original movie found its audiences and it has steadily grown in popularity over the years.

In 2017, it was re-released to a successful run in theaters, in 4K, for its 15th anniversary. There's also talk that Richard Kelly will write and direct a sequel to the film.

The movie stars Jake and Maggie Gyllenhaal (as Donnie and Elizabeth Darko), Jena Malone (Gretchen Ross), Drew Barrymore (Karen Pomeroy), Noah Wyle

Will ‘The Shape of Water’ be the ninth Best Picture Oscar champ not to win any of its three-plus acting nominations?

Will ‘The Shape of Water’ be the ninth Best Picture Oscar champ not to win any of its three-plus acting nominations?
The Shape of Water” is one of two Best Picture Oscar nominees with three acting nominations — the other being “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” — but star Sally Hawkins and supporting players Octavia Spencer and Richard Jenkins are not predicted to win any of them. If they indeed go 0-3 on Sunday and “The Shape of Water” takes the top prize, the fantasy drama will join eight other Best Picture champs that did not convert any of its three-plus acting nominations into wins.

“Birdman” (2014) was the most recent Best Picture winner not to carry an acting award from at least three nominations, as Michael Keaton, Emma Stone and Edward Norton fell to Eddie Redmayne (“The Theory of Everything”), Patricia Arquette (“Boyhood”) and J.K. Simmons (“Whiplash”), respectively. Arquette and Simmons were the supporting frontrunners all season, but Keaton was locked in a tight Best Actor race with Redmayne until the SAG Awards

2018 Oscars: Does Best Picture champ have to win an acting award first?

2018 Oscars: Does Best Picture champ have to win an acting award first?
The Shape of Water” numbers three acting bids among its leading 13 Academy Awards nominations for lead Sally Hawkins and supporting players Richard Jenkins and Octavia Spencer. According to our exclusive Oscar odds none of them is predicted to win on March 4. Should that scenario play out, does that mean that their film won’t win Best Picture?

Not so fast.

While 53 of the 89 Best Picture champs to date include an Oscar-winning performance, 36 of them (40%) did not win any acting awards. And among those three dozen winners are four of the eight films — “The Hurt Locker” (2009), “Argo” (2012), “Birdman” (2015) and “Spotlight” (2016) — decided by preferential ballot under the newly expanded slate of Best Picture nominees.

Surprisingly, an even dozen of the Best Picture winners did not even reap any acting nominations. That is welcome news for “Arrival,” which does not number an acting bid among its eight nominations. However, four of those films
