SAG-AFTRA Candidate Matthew Modine Mixes Comedy and Politics During Fundraiser

  • Variety
Comedy and industry politics mixed Tuesday night at The Hollywood Improv, site of a fundraiser for SAG-AFTRA candidate Matthew Modine and his Membership First slate.

“He looks like Hal Holbrook,” Tom Arnold joked. “He’s aged 100 years.”

Modine is challenging incumbent SAG-aftra President Gabrielle Carteris and three other candidates for the top elected post at the 160,000-member performers union. With two more weeks of campaigning before voting concludes on Aug. 28, the funds raised are earmarked for mailings to members.

Modine noted he’s been so busy that he’s lacked the time to see a dentist about a missing tooth. “Running for office isn’t what I expected,” he said before taking the stage.

Lisa Ann Walter hosted with comedy provided by Arnold, Rick Overton, Cathy Ladman, Julie Goldman, Vinny Fasline, Candice Thompson, and Steve Byrne.

Overton, who’s also running for a convention delegate spot, offered, “I

Fredo Fall-Out: Don Jr. Knows The Feeling; Alec Baldwin, Meghan McCain, The Mooch, Kiss’ Gene Simmons & Others Have Opinions

Is “Fredo” an ethnic slur? Was CNN’s defense of anchor Chris Cuomo sexist? Did Donald Trump Jr. just confess to being the Trump family’s Fredo?

Everyone from the Trump boys to KissGene Simmons, Meghan McCain, Anthony Scaramucci, Tom Arnold and Alec Baldwin are weighing in on the viral video of Cuomo engaged in a loud, obscenity-filled argument with a bar patron. Tha man approached Cuomo and his family and called the CNN star “Fredo,” an apparent reference to The Godfather saga’s doomed, weakling brother (played to perfection by the late John Cazale).

After both Sean Hannity and Donald Trump tweeted about the incident — taking opposite sides, for once — other responses started flooding social media, including some unexpected Cuomo support from conservatives like Hannity, Corey Lewandowski and the Mooch.

And Trump was none too pleased with anyone defending the CNN anchor, even conservatives who complained when Sarah Huckabee Sanders was publicly harassed.

Jimmy Kimmel Defends Working With Mark Burnett After Blaming ‘The Apprentice’ Producer for Donald Trump

Jimmy Kimmel Defends Working With Mark Burnett After Blaming ‘The Apprentice’ Producer for Donald Trump
Jimmy Kimmel defended his decision to work with Mark Burnett after previously blaming the producer for Donald Trump’s unlikely political rise.

“I was just joking,” Kimmel said of his jokes about Burnett on Monday, which came during his stint as Emmys host in 2016. “But if you’re asking will I remind him 15 times a day that Donald Trump is president because of him? Yes, I will remind him of that 15 times a day.”

Back in September 2016, Kimmel singled out Burnett during his monologue as the one person at fault for Trump’s campaign. “Thanks to Mark Burnett, we don’t have to watch reality shows anymore because we’re living in one,” he said. “If Donald Trump gets elected and he builds that wall, the first person we’re throwing over is Mark Burnett.”

Perhaps these two haven't seen each other in quite a while, but the reunion clearly could not have gone any better.

‘Secret Life of Pets’ Screenwriter Brian Lynch Looks Back on His Journey Into Animated Film

  • Variety
If family animation often struggles to earn respect in the film industry, and screenwriters often struggle to get respect in film’s creative hierarchy, then where does that leave a screenwriter who specializes in family animation? In the case of Brian Lynch, the answer is this: thriving, and contributing to films that have accumulated more than a billion dollars at the box office.

Over the past decade, Lynch has become a go-to screenwriter for a slew of Illumination’s biggest animated kidpics, from “Hop” to “Minions” (follow-up “Minions: The Rise of Gru” is on tap for 2020) to “The Secret Life of Pets,” with “The Secret Life of Pets 2″ having topped last weekend’s box office. But Lynch’s evolution into an all-around children’s scribe wasn’t something he could have predicted.

“Other than the Muppets, I really didn’t watch many kids’ movies as a child,” Lynch says.

Tom Arnold Secretly Recorded Call In Which Trump Fixer Michael Cohen Walked Back Some Guilty Pleas
How many red flags can you spot in this sentence:

Donald Trump’s former fixer Michael Cohen took a phone call in March from comedian Tom Arnold, in the course of which Cohen claimed he was not responsible for some of the crimes to which he pleaded guilty, while Arnold secretly recorded the call and gave a copy to the Wall Street Journal.

In its report on the 36-minute tape, WSJ reports Cohen told Arnold he hadn’t evaded taxes and that a criminal charge related to his home-equity line of credit was hooey.

Cohen is headed for the slammer next month to begin a 3-year sentence.

“I’m a man all alone and I shouldn’t be alone any more,” Cohen complained to Arnold in the recording WSJ made available online.

“I mean, after over 100 hours of testimony, including seven and a half hours of being beaten up on national television,

‘Maximum Impact’ Film Review: Pro-Russian Action-Comedy Serves Up Misogyny Alongside Propaganda

‘Maximum Impact’ Film Review: Pro-Russian Action-Comedy Serves Up Misogyny Alongside Propaganda
Let us look back at the history of Russian propaganda films. The standard-bearer must be Sergei Eisenstein’s 1938 “Alexander Nevsky,” a Stalinist-era epic centered on the hero Prince Alexander, who drove out the Romans in the 13th century. The barely-veiled subtext of that film, however, was a depiction of Russo-German relations as the war loomed ahead, with a call to arms for citizens and a clear warning to would-be attackers. I’ve no idea how effective it was at reaching its propagandistic goals, but the film itself is gorgeous and filled with inventive effects, and Eisenstein accomplished at least the feat of cinematic excellence.

Flash forward to 2018, and the quality of Russian propaganda films has fallen dramatically. Case in point: “Maximum Impact,” a joint Russian-American action comedy about a top-secret summit meeting between the American secretary of state and Russian head of state, with the goal of shoring up relations between the two countries.

Tom Arnold on Why He and Bob Woodward are ‘Spirit Animals Right Now’
Tom Arnold pulls no punches when it comes to how he feels about Donald Trump.

“He’s the worst,” he tells Variety simply. “He is the worst person ever, but he’s always been like that.”

It’s that latter assessment that’s fueling Arnold’s single-minded campaign to dig up damning, uncontroversial evidence of Trump’s many alleged foibles — racism, misogyny, double-dealing, business incompetence — that he believes must exist in the many thousands of hours of unedited pre-presidency “Celebrity Apprentice” video, film and audio recordings, a mission he’s documenting on his new Viceland series “The Hunt for the Trump Tapes.”

“The Celebrity Apprentice” executive producer Mark Burnett and his studio MGM Television have stated that they are contractually forbidden from releasing any tapes; Trump has tweeted that, per Burnett, no tapes of him using racist language exist. Former contestant and magician Penn Jillette, who is interviewed on “The Hunt for the Trump Tapes,
