Updated Oscar Predictions For August

As the summer wraps up, the fall film festival season will be launching next week, if you can believe it. With that, a new set of Academy Award predictions is definitely needed. By the time September hits, a number of movies with awards aspirations will have debuted, hoping to attract the early buzz. It’s truly an exciting time if you follow the Oscar race. Today, you’ll see a new number one in Best Picture. At least until the impending festival bows for a bunch of high profile titles. China Accused Of Using Twitter Bots To Help Promote Disney’s Mulan

Mulan is another in a long line of animated Disney classics being recreated in the live-action aesthetic, and ever since the first trailer dropped in early July, fans have been on the fence about the variations between the upcoming film and its predecessor – most notably the absence of Mushu, the lovable dragon sidekick originally voiced by Eddie Murphy.

But the movie’s since drawn a separate string of controversy, courtesy of some political comments made by its star, Liu Yifei. And ever since the young actress expressed support for the Hong Kong police force, who’ve been accused of using excessive force against peaceful protesters, calls to boycott the upcoming film have run rampant online.

With that said, there’ve been some whose excitement for Mulan has actually spiked since Yifei’s comments. At least, that’s what it looks like on the surface.

At the 2019 Oscars, Rami Malek (“Bohemian Rhapsody”) won Best Actor at age 37 over a past winner and three previous nominees. Casey Affleck (“Manchester by the Sea”) did likewise in 2017. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2020 Oscars predictions for Best Actor.)

While Affleck won for a fictional role, Malek prevailed for portraying Queen frontman Freddie Mercury. Of the 10 most recent Best Actor champs at the Academy Awards, seven of them won for bring life to real-life fellows: Colin Firth; Daniel Day-Lewis; Matthew McConaughey; Eddie Redmayne; Leonardo DiCaprio; and Gary Oldman.

Malek was a first-time nominee while each of his four rivals in the 2019 Best Actor race had contended multiple times at the Oscars.
