Hilarious and Brightly Dark
9 July 2017 | by See all my reviews

I've grown to love this show's characters, even Jeff the Gray -- a ridiculously incompetent, whiny, veangeful, procrastinating, bereaved, light gray, egg-headed, three-fingered, all-thumbs, bug-eyed alien with an interspecies kink for reptilians and heavily prejudiced loathing for humans, played by Ken Hall.

We grow attached to the show's characters, alien and human, for their (un-)humanity that is so reminiscent of our own. The humans are freaks because of being abductees; the aliens are freaks because, well, they are freaks dealing with heavy sexual and personal politics in the workplace...while they abduct and (except for the traitors among them) abuse us.

Sounds just like...us?

As such, the two groups are literally in the same boat/flying saucer together, as if Diane Fossey, Marlin Perkins and Ted Nugent went on a human-hunting safari in a densely populated game preserve, captured a bunch of live specimens, and had a real ball manipulating, fornicating or deleting the natives.

The mass appeal of this well-written, well-cast and well-directed series might consist in the fact that it makes the OVNI- and high-strangeness-infested world we live in seem...almost normal. Indeed the look of this series is rather homey, with all the support-group and romance (including alien-human as well as cybernetic, in the case of a teledildonically controlled fembot, functioning as Jeff's raging alter ego on earth).

What is there not to like about People of Earth. Well for one, it only ran to ten episodes, but I suppose that befits a quirky, very-well written series like this. Also it's set in our very own Hudson Valley, a major UFO hotspot on the planet, but filmed in...Ontario? Let them film in my area. We have some old church basements and bucolic scenes and such.
