Trivia

While it seems that most of the boat is made from the forward fuselage, cockpit, and components of a B-29 Superfortress, the forward twin machine gun emplacement was actually not generally used on that kind of aircraft except for rare testing models. It is a modified ventral "belly" or "ball" turret of a B-17 Flying Fortress, or B-24 Liberator bomber, made by Sperry. All three aircraft were used in the Pacific theater (although by 1943, all B-17 units were converted to B-24s). Ball turrets were not well-liked, because the gunner (a small man) was crammed entirely into the turret, sitting in a fetal position between the two .50 caliber machine guns, aiming between his legs. Entry or exit into the ball turret could only happen when the turret and fuselage hatches were properly aligned. If turret damage prevented this for any reason, the gunner was trapped, and had better hope that the landing gear was okay, because there wasn't room for a normal parachute. Instead of this system, the B-29 had an advanced system of two upper, and two lower quad (four-gun) turrets that were aimed remotely using a gunsight behind fishbowl observation windows (the gunner wasn't actually in the turret). A ball turret malfunction, combined with a landing gear malfunction, was featured in Amazing Stories: The Mission (1985). See more »

Goofs

The film depicts an anti-Vietnam War protest in 1973 and treats President Richard Nixon's troop withdrawal announcement as a surprise. In fact, the Paris Accords had been signed in December 1972 and anti-war demonstrations petered out after Nixon accepted cease-fire terms the previous May. It was no secret to anyone in January 1973 that U.S. military involvement in Vietnam was over. See more »

Really, really just terrible.
11 March 2017 | by See all my reviews

I am not a movie snob and am easily entertained, but this movie was absolutely a complete and utter joke. It felt like a 3rd grader wrote the script. It contained every single cliché imaginable, from corny Platoon/Apocalypse Now-type one-liners to ridiculous slow-motion "sacrifice" scenes-- all incredibly cheap, contrived and void of any depth what-so-ever.

Absolutely NO PLOT-- not a single tangible, well-built contextual plot exists in this movie. John C. Reilly was the whole point of the movie-- it should be called "King Reilly and His Adventures"-- but then again, there really weren't any adventures to talk about...

The worst part of the movie was that I could absolutely not tell when the movie was supposed to be serious or a comedic parody, and folks, that's never a good sign, as it usually means the film is not good. And Samuel L. Jackson?? I think I just might use his appearance in future films as cause to not see them because he is clearly cast for his popularity and for a quick marketing boost for films that clearly need that extra kick. I am going to binge-watch King Kong (2005) with Jack Black until I can forget that I ever saw this new attempted failure to reprise Kong. Have our standards really fallen so far?? I honestly do not think there was a single frame that lasted longer than 2 seconds, I am not joking. Oh, the agony.
