Spoilers

The trivia items below may give away important plot points.

Nina Dobrev says she's willing to come back for the series finale as Elena Gilbert to conclude her story on a happy note. Though it's possible they could get her to return earlier as Elena for flashbacks or going inside her head but after some time has passed.
In the novel, Caroline Forbes got pregnant by Tyler. They had twin werewolves. However in the series Caroline is a surrogate mother to twin siphoned-witches.
Candice Accola's pregnancy had to be written into the show. Since Caroline is a vampire she can't get pregnant, so the writers wrote that the Gemini coven transfered Jo's and Alaric's twin babies into Caroline when Jo died.
Nina Dobrev has played four doppelgängers in the series : Elena, Katherine, Amara and Tatia (Seen In A Flashback Episode Of The Original) .
In the book Stefan dated Caroline first. He is avoiding Elena because she looks like Katherine.
In the book Elena has a four year old sister named Margaret whereas in the show she has a younger brother who is actually her cousin .
It is stated early in the show that Stefan would have liked to be a doctor. In late season 5 Stefan's human doppelganger is revealed to be a paramedic.
In season 1 episode 10, Caroline talks about being interested in broadcast journalism. In season 7 when the show jumps three years forward, it is shown that she has become a news producer.
Ian Somerhalder (Damon Salvatore) and Nina Dobrev (Elena Gilbert) also dated in real life from 2010 to 2013.
Book: The Salvatore brothers are from Italy and were born in the late 15th century. Tv Series: The brothers are from Mystic Falls and became vampires during the civil war.
Annie Wersching plays Damon Salvatore and Stefan Salvatore's mother but is one year and eight months older than Ian Somerhalder and five years older than Paul Wesley. But she became a vampire when they were children so the age difference in real life makes sense.
In the pilot, Caroline tells Bonnie all that she found out about the "new kid" Stefan and concludes with "we're planning a June wedding." In season 8, Caroline is planning a June wedding for her and Stefan following his proposal in episode 2.
In the book Stefan is renting in a boarding house, but in the series they owned the boarding house.
Zach Roerig (Matt Donovan) and Candice King (Caroline Forbes) also dated in real life from 2011 to 2012.
In The Originals, Tyler Lockwood was cemented by Rebekah Mikaelson in the underground cellar but in The Vampire Diaries, he was killed by Damon Salvatore.
Even thought Damon and Elena finally reunite in the series finale, they are never seen sharing any dialogue between each other in any of their scenes.
Michael Malarkey (Enzo) is sitting playing the guitar in Season 7, episode 2 when Lily Salvatore talks to him. In actual fact the tune that he is playing is the song 'scars' which Michael Malarkey has actually released as a song. The song plays again over the end scene of Season 8, episode 8 when Stefan attacks all the people in the hospital when his humanity is off.
All three main cast actors have left the series so far: Steven R.McQueen (Jeremy Gilbert) left in 2015, his on screen sister/cousin Nina Dobrev (Elena Gilbert) left in 2016 just like their on screen werewolf friend Michael Trevino (Tyler Lockwood).
In the vampire diaries episode eight of season one, Lexi (one of Stefen's friend) Said "I was feeling epic". The final episode was called "I was feeling epic" and this was said when they both finally met each other again.
Julie Plec always wanted the show to end with Stefan and Elena together but had to alter the story line after Nina left and only returned for the end of the series.
