Universal Plays Blu-ray Catch-Up

Universal Studios, the last company to remain exclusively in the HD DVD camp, is now rushing to get its films out in the Blu-ray high-definition video format, following the decision by Toshiba to abandon it. Universal announced Thursday that it plans to release 40 films on Blu-ray disks, most of them previously released for HD DVD, by the end of the year. But illustrating the awkward difficulty for studios to alter direction, Universal's first Blu-ray releases won't come until July 22, with a package of "Mummy" films, including The Mummy, The Mummy Returns, and The Scorpion King.The July release is time to coincide with the theatrical release of The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. Universal will not release a package of television shows until August 26, when the first season Heroes hits the shelves. It has already been released on HD DVD.

Fraser Splits from Wife

Canadian actor Brendan Fraser has split from his wife after nine years of marriage. The Mummy star, 39, and wife Afton announced their separation on Wednesday. Fraser's publicist, Ina Treciokas, says, "They continue to maintain a close and caring friendship." The couple wed in 1998 and have three children.

Weisz Drops Out of 'The Mummy 3'

The Constant Gardener Oscar winner Rachel Weisz has turned down a role in The Mummy 3, leaving her co-star Brendan Fraser without an on-screen wife. Weisz and Fraser played love interests Evelyn Carnahan O'Connell and Rick O'Connell in Stephen Sommers' Egyptian action movies The Mummy and The Mummy Returns. While Fraser has signed on to star in a second sequel, Weisz is unable to commit due to a scheduling conflict. The Fast And The Furious director Rob Cohen is set to take over from Sommers for the third movie, which is scheduled for release next year.
