AFI Fest Can Be a Mixed Bag for Oscar Hopefuls

AFI Fest Can Be a Mixed Bag for Oscar Hopefuls
With early November being prime real estate for the annual movie awards season, you might think the AFI Fest would be a vital springboard into the Oscar race. But the blunt truth is that the event hasn’t been much of a lucky charm.

Over the past decade, films that have gone to the fest looking to establish a wave of support, only to more or less crash on the rocks, include Emilio Estevez’s “Bobby,” Robert Redford’s “Lions for Lambs,” Edward Zwick’s “Defiance” and “Love & Other Drugs,” Clint Eastwood’s “J. Edgar,” Sacha Gervasi’s “Hitchcock,” John Lee Hancock’s “Saving Mr. Banks” and J.C. Chandor’s “A Most Violent Year,” to name a few.

This year, the festival — which kicks off Nov. 5 — boasts three compelling world premieres in opening night, centerpiece and closing night slots, respectively: Angelina Jolie’s “By the Sea,” Peter Landesman’s “Concussion

Will Smith Lines Up 'The American Can' Again With Ed Zwick, Flips Through Papers From Black List 'The Accountant'

It seems Will Smith is getting jiggy with it, cinematically speaking. Though he's a major box office star, the Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air is super choosy and generally averages about one movie per year. But it looks like he's ready to get much busier. Earlier this week he replaced Ben Affleck on Warner Bros. con man romantic comedy "Focus," and now two more projects are dropping into his lap. The first one has actually been around for a while. Entitled "The American Can," way back in 2009 "The Blind Side" director John Lee Hancock signed up to direct (he co-wrote the script too, but he has since moved on) with Smith to star. Two years later, Smith was going to produce the movie instead, and was eager to get Denzel Washington for the lead role. Now, two more years on, the actor is back in the starring role and has Ed Zwick ("Love And Other Drugs,

History Renews Vikings For 10 Episode Second Season

As of yesterday, Donal Logue wasn’t certain of his future on Vikings (or, led one to believe same anyway), but today the show has been renewed for a second season. Logue (interview coverage soon), who plays the Viking King, may still be uncertain, I suppose, because who knows where the show is going, but the curiosity of timing was rather interesting.

The trials of Ragnar and clan have proven a solid venture as far as ratings are concerned, and the show not only has established a loyal viewership, but has managed strong ratings from critics.

Four new episodes remain of the first season, though you’d be hard-pressed to tell that from History’s show page, and the next episode is going to be a real high point of the show. Ragnar and the Earl will finally lock horns in the more vikingly sense, and it’s going

Alex Pettyfer and Gabriella Wilde to Lead Endless Love Remake

After an extensive casting search, the leads have been set for director Shana Feste’s (Country Strong) remake of the 1981 film Endless Love. Variety reports that Alex Pettyfer (Magic Mike) and Gabriella Wilde (The Three Musketeers) will star in the pic, which centers on a passionate relationship between two teenagers. Franco Zeffirelli’s original film starred Brooke Shields and Martin Hewitt and was based on the novel of the same name by Scott Spencer, but it’s unknown how closely Feste’s take will follow the plot of either of those iterations. Feste rewrote the script originally penned by Josh Safran, and Scott Stuber (Ted, Love and Other Drugs) is producing. Pettyfer and Wilde were cast after a number of screen tests, with Brenton Thwaites, Sarah Bolger, and Olivia Cooke reportedly in the running as well. Pettyfer was last seen in 2012’s Magic Mike and also starred in I Am Number Four and In Time,

A Glimpse Inside The Mind Of Charles Swan III Review: Sheen’s Still Got It, But The Script’s A Mess

Rating: 2.5 out of 5 stars

It doesn’t take a Holmesian level of deduction to realise that the titular protagonist of Roman Coppola’s second feature isn’t a million miles away from the troubled star who plays him; for all intents and purposes, the headcase calling himself Charles Swan III (or Charlie, as his friends refer to him) might as well be Charlie Sheen, who no doubt saves money on therapy bills by working through some of his personal issues on screen here.

Swan is a hotshot graphics designer in the 1970s, and when his girlfriend Ivana (Katheryn Winnick) dumps him, his life crashes down around him. Caught between two extremes – of wanting to win Ivana back and vowing never to speak to her again – Charles meanwhile seeks counsel in his friend Kirby (Jason Schwartzman) and manager Saul (Bill Murray), and tries to contend with nagging health issues, as well

Sarah Michelle Gellar back on TV – Goes From Ringer to Parenthood-Themed Comedy?

  • Boomtron
Some people belong on television. In my humble opinion, Sarah Michelle Gellar is one of those people. With the moody CW soap Ringer dead and buried after just one season, is Gellar ready for her next come-back?

According to the new TV Line exclusive, there’s a new half-hour comedy in the works and it’s got Gellar’s name all over it. I’m glad, of course, but my initial concern is, a comedy? Really?

The series, which is as of yet untitled, is being developed over at 20th Century Fox TV, which boys and girls, was also home to Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Oooo! I can’t get a feel for whether this is clean fun, or one of those sitcoms that would air closer to my bedtime. Still, it has a family centric plot. It details the crazy capers parents can get caught up in when their kids are not at home.

Ben Mendelsohn Joins Gyllenhaal For ‘Mississippi Grind’

You may not recognise the name ‘Ben Mendelsohn’, but you’ll definitely recognise his face. He recently starred as the slimy businessman Daggett in The Dark Knight Rises, and he’s also popped up in the trailer for the Derek Cianfrance-directed The Place Beyond The Pines. Mendelsohn obviously knows how to pick his A-List co-stars (Christian Bale, Ryan Gosling) and he’s continuing on this streak by signing his name up for Mississippi Grind, opposite Brokeback Mountain star Jake Gyllenhaal.

The film – set to be directed by Half Nelson partners Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden – focuses on Gyllenhaal as a young, cocky gambler who befriends an older, debt-riddled gentleman, as they decide to travel across the South hoping to change their bad luck.

Gyllenhaal has proved he can tackle the lighter stuff (Love And Other Drugs), alongside his more serious roles in Donnie Darko, Brokeback Moutain and End Of Watch.

Gellar is attached to an untitled comedy set up at 20th Century Fox TV, TVLine reports. It's about parents and what they do when the kids aren't around. Gellar would play one half of the show's central couple.

The pilot is based on a spec script by Shepard Boucher ("Men at Work"). Comedy veteran David Hemingson ("Don't Trust the B---- in Apt. 23," "Just Shoot Me") and Margaret Riley ("Love and Other Drugs") are on board as executive producers.

It doesn't have a network home yet but will be shopped around in the next few weeks. The networks have already made most of their script purchases for the coming development season, but with Gellar attached this one could easily stir interest.

Anne Hathaway puts her best fashion foot forward in 2012

  • Cineplex
2012 has been nothing but nice for Anne Hathaway.

After a couple of box office duds (see: One Day and Love and Other Drugs, or make that don’t see them), the congenial brunette is back on top in a big way. First there was her kick ass performance as Catwoman in The Dark Knight Rises that made us see her in a whole new light. And now Anne is closing out the year with a bang by starring in the big screen adaptation of the musical Les Misérables, complete with award noms. Not only is it a chance for her to showcase impressive singing chops, it’s a role Anne embraced inside and out with a near starvation diet to achieve her character Fantine’s poverty stricken body and completely cropping off her shiny mane. We applaud Annie for her commitment to her craft, when she does something she doesn’t half ass it.
