Trivia

Keith Richards: Agreed to appear as Jack Sparrow's father, and the keeper of the pirate code. He has been noted as a primary influence on Johnny Depp's performance as Jack Sparrow, and was pursued for an appearance in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003) and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006), but was on tour with The Rolling Stones at the time. The day that Richards had come in to film his scenes, he became so drunk on the movie set, Gore Verbinski had to prop him up, just so he could continue his scenes. Richards remarked, "If you wanted straight, then you got the wrong man." See more »

Goofs

If Barbossa started off as Jack Sparrow's first mate, then he would not have been a pirate lord and would not have had one of the nine pieces of eight unless he took it from Jack Sparrow prior to marooning him on the island (referenced in the first POTC). However, it is shown that Jack Sparrow still has one of the nine pieces of eight. How did Barbossa, as a mutinous first mate to Jack Sparrow, become one of the pirate lords and have one of the nine pieces of eight? See more »

Bloated and overrated,
25 May 2007 | by See all my reviews

I went to see the 9:30 show yesterday with five friends, and we were pumped. Actually, they were, since I had the feeling that Pirates 3 would end up as another Pirates 2: too long, special-effect heavy, and a nonsensical plot that passed itself as being "heavy" but making no sense.

Yes, the movie opens up perfectly, and offers hope. But after that, the movie goes down. Way down. There's all these little things flying around that try to come together, but most of the time I was scratching my head, despite having seen the previous two movies.

There is, of course, bright spots. When Johnny Depp FINALLY comes back, the movie becomes more interesting. The English antagonist is decidedly evil and plotting, and there are back stabs throughout the movie.

Really, it aspires to be an epic pirate movie, but there's too much wind for its sails.

There are some awe-inspiring and epic scenes, no doubt, but the movie as a whole will leave anyone but the most die-hard fans (which by from the ratings are many) wanting to walk this Pirate's plank.
