Mathilda, a 12-year-old girl, is reluctantly taken in by Léon, a professional assassin, after her family is murdered. Léon and Mathilda form an unusual relationship, as she becomes his protégée and learns the assassin's trade.
When their relationship turns sour, a couple undergoes a procedure to have each other erased from their memories. But it is only through the process of loss that they discover what they had to begin with.

In the opening sequence, Guy Fawkes is hanged with his hands tied behind him, dropping with the rope breaking his neck. This might have happened in the USA in the 19th or 20th century. In 17th century England, the sentence for treason was to be hanged, drawn and quartered (see Braveheart). Guy actually killed himself by leaping from the scaffold. As quoted in Wikipedia - "Immediately before his execution on 31 January, Fawkes jumped from the scaffold where he was to be hanged and broke his neck, thus avoiding the agony of the mutilation that followed."
