The vampires in Underworld are *not* supernatural. They are humans infected with a genetic abnormality that gives them heightened strength, senses, and an abnormal thirst for blood. The fact that direct sunlight will kill these vampires just like it kills their more traditional supernatural counterparts remains unexplained, however.

Like the vampires, the werewolves in Underworld are *not* supernatural. They come from the same genetic source as the vampires, but inherited traits from a wolf rather than a bat.

Alexander Corvinus was a Hungarian warlord in the 5th century whose village was ravaged by plague. Alexander had a rare (extremely rare) blood abnormality that gave him the ability to mold the sickness to his benefit within his own body. From this, he was granted superhuman strength and immortal life. Later, he fathered three sons. All three sons carried the same gene as Alexander, but in a dormant state. One son remained human and died a mortal death, passing down the hidden gene through his bloodlines. The other two were bitten by bat and by wolf, respectively, becoming the first vampire and werewolf.

(Spoilers for Underworld Evolution) Markus is now a vampire-werewolf hybrid. Because he carried the blood of Alexander in his system, his body had the ability to mold his original vampire blood with the blood of the dead werewolf scientist to create a powerful hybrid.
