Storyline

School's out, exams are over, and it's time for real life to begin. But before 12 friends from the International High School in Prague disappear to the four corners of the earth, they intend to throw the best party of their lives. The idea to stage the party in Prague's biggest swimming pool is illegal but cool. And when Gregor, the laid-back leader of the group thinks an idea is good, then no-one else from the group objects. But what begins as the night of all nights quickly turns into a life and death struggle, as the friends come to realise that death itself is on the guest list... A mysterious masked killer sets a hunt in motion that ranges through the facility's halls and corridors. As the kids panic it begins to dawn on them that the killer must be one of them... Average dumb slasher
10 October 2008 | by (United Kingdom) – See all my reviews

The Pool is a mindlessly watchable if not too impressive slasher, interesting for its cast and location as well as some of its kill scenes. The cast includes a pre stardom James McAvoy and pretty Australian Isla Fisher in a multi national blend that also contains some pretty bad acting. Thorsten Grasshoff makes for a particularly irritating smooth guy and of the rest only Elena Uhlig, who plays a mildly interesting cold, classy European, makes much of an impression in no small part due to her being quite a fine woman. There's also a cop pottering about and complaining repeatedly about, "damn kids", but he isn't too relevant. This varied bunch have a party at a swimming complex that leads to an inevitable spree of death and the film is pretty fast paced with some nice kill sequences. Its never particularly gory in the sense of gruesome effects but it does have a fair amount of bloodshed and the kills are usually quite vicious with a few standing out because of a good streak of nastiness. This is a pretty average film, with many obnoxious characters and stupid lines. Though the direction is pretty decent the script is very generic, production line stuff with little of interest. No one is that sympathetic and the ending is flawed on numerous levels. The ending is what really sinks this one, as the film could have been an overall neat experience had the final showdown come up with the goods but in fact its climax is pretty lame, beneath even something like the gob smacking end of Hide And Go Shreik and any serious slasher fan will likely remember that one. Another problem is the baffling lack of nudity. For a film about a drunken pool party to lack mindless nudity is jut a waste and it kinda grates. Still, there are a lot worse out there and at least this film tries. Possibly worth a look to slasher devotees, others will likely not be too impressed.
