This was a Pop Rock weekly variety show seen on NBC As with ABC TVs "Shindig", which began 4 months earlier, this series combined the musical trends of the day, "The British Invasion", Detroits' "Motown" sound and the merging Folk Rock trend. Unlike "Shindig", this series featured a segment from Great Britian hosted by The Beatles' manager Brian Epstein who presented "up and coming" groups. The weekly hosts, at the NBC Bubank studio, included George Hamilton, Roger Smith, Noel Harrison, Paul Anka and Sammy Davis Jr. The performers , from both sides of the Atlantic, included The Four Seasons, The Beatles, Nancy Sinatra, Gary Lewis and The Playboys, Petulia Clark, Barry McGuire, The Kinks, Herman's Hermits, The Byrds and The Lovin' Spoonful Written by
While the series was in color, in its' 2nd season only, during its original run, only a few episodes have survived in color. All the rest of the episodes, including the first season (Jan. - July 1965) have survived on black and white "kinescopes" (TV images recorded on film). This is because NBC destroyed the tapes in the 1970s once Smith-Hemion Productions turned down the offer to take them into their possession. See more »
I also saw Woody Allen live on another Hullabaloo episode - at about the same time. that is apparently not covered in this discography. It was in 1963 or 1964 - televised in Boston - with Jack Linkletter as host. Stars were The Chad Mitchell Trio as headliners; other guests included Leon Bibb and The Big Three (female singer was a then "unknown" Cass Elliot, who later would join The Mamas and Papas) and another folksinger - Joe Washington?. Woody Allen was the lone stand-up comic, honing his craft as a neurotic, under-sized. Jewish New Yorker whose observations were pointed and funny. He talked about dating, growing up, education. and the world around him. Ties then were about 1" wide.
