Emily Watson's Gum Chewing Secret
7 July 2000 (WENN)
Movie star Emily Watson had a hard time changing her English accent for a Chicago one in her upcoming film Trixie (2000) - until she discovered chewing gum. The actress who plays a bumbling detective in the new film, found that gum was the magic ingredient to help her along. She explains, "We sat for a couple of days working on the dialect and I'm thinking, 'Oh God I'm not gonna get this' and then I started chewing gum during the lessons and that really helped. It's a great release that suddenly makes you feel kind of blah." And the star of Angela's Ashes (1999) also had to abandon her pompous attitudes about being British. She explains, "There's something about being English and seeing yourself as an intelligent cultured person that makes it quite difficult to really go for that sound. It wasn't until I realized that I had to let go of the ideas of the person who I thought I was to crack the accent."
