A blonde's loss of memory and identity disrupt a man's life
18 January 2017 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

"La Bionda" (1993) is both underrated and rather unknown, although critic John Grant has it in his noir list. This is a neo-noir that's well above average. It's intelligent and suspenseful. The directing and cinematography are excellent. There are three main roles in this gripping story and they are all well-acted.

This is the kind of movie where one can tell right from the outset that the director knows exactly what he is doing and is doing it well. The protagonist (Tommaso), played by director Sergio Rubini, leads a well-ordered life, except that we can tell he's irritated by the pressure to marry coming from his home town in the south. He's away in Milan learning the meticulous and orderly craft of watch repair. Tommaso wants nothing more than to escape into his craft and not have to be with others. You could ask, "What makes a human being tick"? Or "What makes a human being"? Memories? Of what? What is identity? Tommaso thinks of himself and his life in relation to others in definite ways; but when an accident links him to a beauty, Christine (Nastassja Kinski), his life and identity are turned upside down, or is it that he has found a new identity while helping her retrieve her old one? Christine's previous relationship with Alberto (Ennio Fantastichini) brings in a man whose whole life is tied up with a drug deal. That's how he sees and expresses it.

"La Bionda" is a true neo-noir, meaning a genuinely creative effort. This is not a visit to past detective noirs or any other of typical plot elements and themes. Yet it is clearly noir and very well-done noir in identifiable respects.
