W.C. Fields as an owl! Well almost....

I don't think this as animation genius Jannik Hastrup's best movie. That would either be 'Dreaming of Paradise' or 'Samson & Sally'. The two movies he did previously just before this one. But 'War of the Birds', very loosely based on a metaphoric 70's novel, is still a serious treat for kids in all ages. And mighty fun for adults as well. The plot isn't that important. It is primarily the story of the bird Oliver and his upbringing in a forest ruled with an iron grip by the evil hawk Fagin. The film wins for the charming and very lively animation. And for the more lowkey but effectual humor supported by a incredible parade of characters that includes an W.C. Fields inspired owl (nuff said!); a patch-eyed, soul-singing seagull; two lovely mice brothers and Fagin who as a villain wipes the floor with most of Disney's latest output.
