Trivia

The fact that Pedro sees different women looking a lot like Dorita was not in the original novel, but a visual solution Vicente Aranda came up with to show the increasing lust between the characters. According to Aranda, it was also a game to have fun with Victoria Abril and have her play different roles. See more »

Raw and hard Vicente Aranda film showing the society of that time.

Madrid, the 40s. "Pedro" (Imanol Arias), is a young doctor working in a government of cancer research using guinea pigs from North America. When you run out of guinea pigs, the center concierge advised to turn to "El Muecas" (Francisco Rabal), a friend of his who has raised a couple of guinea pigs to sell. Film based on the novel by Luis Martin Santos.

This film gives us the opportunity to accompany the protagonist "Pedro" in his personal adventure that invites the viewer to know the social reality of the city of the Spanish Civil War, covering their wanderings by a tragic ride back and forth from the very clear Unlike existing classes in the coming period and to a lesser extent today.

An excess of theatricality to the proceedings, very visible in the character of the grandmother, who plays gypsy or Juan Echanove, merely accentuate the sense of reality in what he is seeing the audience, inviting them to think it's a representation more real than reality itself, as he did in his films Bergman, respecting the distances.

It's a great script, great direction and great actors in a state of inspiration, Paco Rabal, "El Muecas" just as well as making "Azarías" in "Los Santos Inocentes", Imanol Arias, showing impeccable diction, Victoria Abril, showing her best beauty ...

The movie, the book draws its essence, its skeleton argument. And yet, surprisingly, does not lack forcefulness. The Odyssey stormy protagonist is told intelligibly though not simple, without actually blend in no time. All actors have a remarkable performance.
