A very amusing comedy written by the great Jack Rosenthal.
Football mad Geoffery is dating Beryl. All Beryl is interested in is
marriage and all Geoffery is interested in is Percy Filth (Sex). It is
an on-off relationship in series 1. Most of it was set in Beryl's
house, who lived with her Mum. Geoffery's best friend was Roland. Come
series 2, the pair finally engaged and in the last episode, Geoffery
thought he could get out of it, by taking a job in Fleetwood for a
year. Beryl is crying seeing him go, but the last scene Geoffery came
back and said, "Fleetwood aren't even in the fourth division".
Jack Rosenthal wrote the first series and his landlord Geoffery
Lancashire wrote the second. If anyone is after a good read, get Jack
Rosenthal's autobiography, i've read it, it is a scripted
autobiography, a very good idea. Perhaps the best scene's in it though,
were the ones featuring Alison King. A woman, who didn't say anything
who would just be around when Geoffery would say something outrageous,
mostly sexually related, like "I want to rape her" and would look
horrified. My favourite line was in a series 2 episode where Geoffery
and Beryl have fallen out and Geoffery calls round, pretending to see
Beryl's Mum. She is reading a book, there is an awkward silence, then
Geoffery says "Are you reading a BOOK Mrs Battersby". It may not sound
very funny, but the way Richard Beckinsale said it made it hilarious.
In sitcoms, they always make Mancunian male characters obsessed with
football. Geoffery was. Saying that, I can't say anything, i'm
Mancunian and i'm obsessed with football. Richard Beckinsale was great
and gormless as ever, it was such a tragedy he died so young, Paula
Wilcox was great and so was Joan Scott who played Beryl's Mum Best
Episode: Brainwashing Series 1 episode 4.
