surprisingly complex coming-of-age story given a tense thriller coating...
5 April 2003 | by See all my reviews

This is one of those films that passed almost unnoticed when it was first released, but seen some years later it provides an unexpected treat. I expected to see a typical 60s British B movie, but gradually realised I had discovered a really tense and subtle coming-of-age story about a young girl who gets curious about her older brother. Where does he go in the evenings ? Why won't he talk about it ? Can he be the killer who is on the loose ? Her investigations draw her into an adult world she did not know existed. This is a beautifully crafted film in which even the smallest roles are given full weight, and only its bog-standard damsel-in-distress ending spoils it. But not that much. As it is, Jenny Agutter, who was a wonderful child actress, is, well, wonderful, and gets fine support from the TV stalwart, Bryan Marshall,as her brother,( whose naturally stiff features are idealy suited to a man of mystery ) and from a chirpy young actress, Claire Sutcliffe, as her best friend.
