Trivia

A 3/4-sized replica of the White Horse in Berkshire was recreated on the slopes of Knockma Hill in County Galway. It was designed and cut eighteen inches deep, two hundred eighty feet long, sixty feet at its widest, and filled with about seventeen tons of plaster. The Berkshire White Horse, which dates from before the English and Viking battles, was the scene of King Alfred's encounter with the Viking invaders. See more »

Quotes

Guthrum: I am Guthrum, son of Odin! This is Ivar, my warrior cheif. He's called Ivar the boneless because his mother made him with gristle, instead of bone. Show them.
[Ivar performs impressive acrobatics with a sword]
Guthrum: He fights as well.
Alfred: I am Alfred, king of Wessex. This is my cousin, Athelstan of Lamborn. I fear he only jumps on Danish graves.

Great Fun
24 April 2001 | by See all my reviews

Hemmings and Michael York combine to give us a great tale of a time of great chaos in what eventually became England. Hemmings is superb as the man who would have become a priest and York is likewise great as the scoundrel Danish Thane. Prunella Ransome and Ian McKellen are also delightful. Alas, no video. Watch for it on the late show.
