A little known and seldom shown children's film which looks a bit dated today, but is still full of naïve charm. It purports to be the story of Hans Christian Andersen as a lad, with a mix of live action and stop-motion puppetry. The cast is really quite wonderful, with Ray Bolger and Margaret Hamilton, the Scarecrow and Witch of the West from The Wizard of Oz 27 years earlier, making live appearances in cameos, and voices provided for the puppets by Tallulah Bankhead, Boris Karloff, Burl Ives, Cyril Ritchard, Victor Borge, Sessue Hayakawa and more. The color is great, the puppet props charming, and young Paul O'Keefe is convincing as the blond boy, despite his Bronx accent. The inclusion of Danish Victor Borge in the cast of this Danish story is only one of several nice touches.
