This beautifully-filmed western has a solid cast of character actors, the great natural beauty of Death Valley and an interesting story that somehow never got fleshed out and results in a middling outdoor adventure. A cavalry patrol races against time to locate an Indian village and deliver a peace treaty to a chief who will go on the warpath without a pledge of peace from the soldiers. This film is not a cavalry-Indian western as the title implies but is instead a yarn that takes its time getting started and has very little pace or action as the story unfolds. As fate would have it, the troop enlists the chief's son as a guide to lead them to his village but Tazlik, the only Indian warrior in the film, has other ideas about the treaty and frustrates the soldiers at every bend in the trail. Robert Stack is a determined, no-nonsense lieutenant who has to contend with dissension in his ranks. The troopers are homesick for their wives, newborn children and sweethearts at the fort and Lt. Billings has quite a task in getting his men to stay the course and deliver the treaty. The soldiers battle treachery from Tazlik, thirst, the dry, barren desert, the hot sun and each other, and what action there is occurs near the end of the film when Tazlik's sister takes rifle in hand to keep the soldiers from her village. There is a nice music score but good orchestration can carry a western with limited action only so far. The film's best action takes place during the opening credits but the movie stalls shortly thereafter and never really picks up any momentum. "War Paint" had the potential to be a much better film but gets bogged down with details as the troopers wind their way through the desert and canyons with their greatest enemy in their ranks, leading them around in circles.
