10. "Transparent" – Rating: 8.0
Jeffrey Tambor is the official king of OTT shows, with two titles on this list. Amazon debuted this original comedy series in 2014, with Tambor playing the lead character, Maura Pfefferman (born Morton Pfefferman), a transgender, divorced, parent of three self-absorbed grown kids. Series creator Jill Soloway said the story is loosely based on her own father coming out as a trans parent. So far, Tambor has one Emmy Award and one Golden Globe for this role, making him the first actor to win an Emmy for playing a transgender character.
As one IMDb user reviewed: This is the story of a family, relationships, the lies we tell ourselves and each other. Dark yet warming, the pilot takes its time introducing its characters, revealing their deeply held flaws. Though the writing is naturalistic and a joy, the acting is what reveals the full possibilities of this wonderful series.
9. "Mozart in the Jungle" – Rating: 8.2
Amazon is making a name for itself in the streaming world, one note at a time, including in this "dramedy" based on the memoir "Mozart in the Jungle: Sex, Drugs, and Classical Music" by oboist Blair Tindall. Gael García Bernal, known to many from his roles in films like The Motorcycle Diaries and Y Tu Mamá También, anchors the series as brash new maestro Rodrigo, who shakes up the New York Symphony. The star-studded series immerses viewers in the orchestral world, but the performances elevate it beyond something just for a niche audience.
One IMDb user writes: It took me a single day of blissful binge-watching to finish the entire first season and I must say I am impressed. The characters are strong and able to draw you in, the atmosphere and setting are captivating, and the music is simply top-notch. When all are tied neatly together it makes for a wondrously entertaining season.
8. "Bloodline" – Rating: 8.3
This Netflix thriller doesn't get the attention enjoyed by some of its siblings, like "House of Cards" and "Orange is the New Black," but the fans who do watch "Bloodline" are effusive with their praise and consider it an underrated gem. The story stars "Friday Night Lights" alum Kyle Chandler, and follows the Rayburn family, and how they react when the oldest son and black sheep of the family (played by Ben Mendelsohn) returns home to the family's beachside hotel in the Florida Keys.
The fans have taken to this one, even more than the critics, with IMDb reviewers calling it "A Masterpiece" and "Among the Absolute Best First Seasons. We'll have to see what fans think of Season 2, when Netflix drops 10 more episodes on May 27.
7. "Bosch" – Rating: 8.3
"Bosch," like most of the titles on this list, is based on other source material, in this case crime author Michael Connelly's novels following L.A. police detective Harry Bosch. Titus Welliver is Amazon's Bosch and fans gave the lead a resounding thumbs up, with one IMDb user reviewer writing "...frankly I just couldn't imagine who could ever come close to portraying Bosch as I have always pictured him, until Titus Welliver. He is SO incredibly adept and believable at being (as opposed to playing) Bosch, it's uncanny."
Amazon involved fans in the decision to pick up this show, streaming the pilot online and allowing viewers to offer their opinions. Apparently fans liked it, because it was ordered for a full season and the second season premiered March 11.
6. "Orange Is the New Black" – Rating: 8.3
This dark and irreverent prison comedy, based on Piper Kerman's memoir, "Orange Is the New Black: My Year in a Women's Prison," is arguably the most high profile series on the list. So far, after three seasons, it has 83 nominations and 36 wins from just about every awards show, including the Emmys, Golden Globe Awards, and Screen Actors Guild. Season 4 is coming June 17 and every episode will surely be dissected by fans and critics.
But with great power comes great responsibility, and the increased attention means viewers care enough to hold OITNB to a high standard. The 8.3 rating for this comes from, so far, 173,220 users. Meanwhile, "Bosch" has the same 8.3 rating, but from only 14,051 users to date, and the higher rated "Sense8" gets its ranking from only 59,275 users.
5. "Jessica Jones" Rating: 8.3
We have officially entered the Marvel phase of our programming, and fans should expect to see more names on this list as more Marvel Cinematic Universe series ("Luke Cage," ""Iron Fist," "The Defenders") premiere on Netflix. In "Jessica Jones," Krysten Ritter — previously known from "Breaking Bad" and "Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23" — plays the titular former superhero who starts her own detective agency. Ritter and "Doctor Who" alum David Tennant have been singled out for their strong performances, and fans love the show's gritty noir tone. Believe it or not, former ABC Entertainment President Paul Lee said that network passed on "Marvel's Jessica Jones," which was then called "A.K.A. Jessica Jones."
Why isn't this ranked as high as Marvel's "Daredevil"? It’s hard to say, and maybe it’s not even fair to compare them, although that’s part of the deal in the MCU. As one IMDb reviewer wrote: Jessica Jones is excellent, just as brutal and uncompromising as its predecessor. But by placing its stellar female cast in this murky underworld and letting them shine in a way Marvel has never done before, it stands head and shoulders above the company's other marquee properties to become one of the best new shows out this year. Daredevil was great by Marvel standards. Jessica Jones is just great.
4. "Sense8" – Rating: 8.4
"Sense8" is another Netflix series that seems to have cult hit-status, only because you rarely hear about it as much as some others. So far, only 59,275 users have contributed to its rating, as opposed to six figures for "Orange is the New Black," "House of Cards," and "Arrested Development." This series follows eight strangers from around the world who suddenly have a common vision and realize they are mentally and emotionally connected.
This is a seriously polarizing one, eliciting strong opinions from IMDb reviewers. A fan of the show writes: While most TV and movies nowadays are always aiming to be bigger and more explosive, Sense8 almost feels as if it is taking a step back; instead of throwing more and more outrageous action sequences and special effects at the screen, it strips those things away to get back to the real meat of storytelling. Which is, quite simply, people. The characters are what drive this masterpiece - each one is engaging, complex, unique, and draws you in emotionally from the get-go.
3. "Daredevil"– Rating: 8.8
"Daredevil" — following Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock, the blind lawyer who fights crime via the law by day, and as a vigilante by night — was the first of Marvel's Netflix series to arrive, eventually leading up to a "Defenders" crossover miniseries. This is where rating a series gets interesting, because Season 1 was adored by critics and fans — getting a 98 percent fresh rating from RT critics, with 96 percent of RT users loving it, patting its back with a 4.6/5 rating.
However, that set up high expectations for Season 2, which recently arrived to much less acclaim. Season 2 currently has a 74 percent rating from critics. IMDb users don't seem to agree with the critics, rating four Season 2 episodes with 9.6 and 9.5, the highest of the series to date. As one IMDb user writes: The first four episodes of season 2 might be the best stretch of comic book episodes put to screen, ever. It's unbelievable. Seeing that alone should sell you on the show (but you should most certainly start with season 1). Daredevil is just something you have to experience if you're a comic book fan, or an action fan, or a fan of quality television. It's that good.
2. "Arrested Development" – Rating: 9
"Arrested Development" is a bit of a hybrid, since it spent three seasons on FOX before a fourth season streamed on Netflix. This show is so quotable and self-referential, it became a cult hit that rewarded its loyal viewers with new Easter eggs to pick up after each viewing. However, if you check out the top-rated episodes from IMDb users, they are exclusively from the pre-Netflix seasons. In fact, the first episode from Season 4 to make the cut was Episode 11, "A New Attitude," with an 8.8 user rating, which sounds good but it's 15th on the list.
But fans still love "Arrested" — Season 1 actually has a 100 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes — and Season 4 has its share of defenders. Plus, fans were just happy to see the Bluths again after the 2006 TV series cancellation. A fifth season is meant to arrive on Netflix at some point (cross your fingers), and if it's as good as the originals, it could dethrone No. 1.
1. "House of Cards" – Rating: 9
You had to know Frank Underwood would be No. 1. He would never stand for anything less. This U.S. political drama was born from the U.K. miniseries of the same name, with the same fourth-wall-breaking format, which was itself based on the novels by Michael Dobbs. The American series quickly took on a life of its own, and even though the recent Season 4 has gotten more mixed reviews, HoC still gets a lot of attention (more than 286,000 users voted this to the top) and a lot of acclaim. Plus, several Season 4 episodes are still ranked among the highest, from IMDb users, including a 9.7 for the finale.
There's more to come in Season 5, but original showrunner Beau Willimon is leaving, so fans will have to see if HoC and the Underwoods can remain at the top or see their rule come to an end.
