Synopsis
Director Stan Dragoti, whose forte is plumbing the depths of the male psyche, plumbs those depths once again in She's Out of Control. Tony Danza stars as Doug Simpson, a broadcasting executive who has trouble adjusting to the fact that his fifteen-year-old daughter Katie (Ami Dolenz) is blossoming into a sexual being. This realization kicks in after his fiancee Janet (Catherine Hicks) takes Katie for a makeover; suddenly she appears before Doug looking like a sultry super model. Now Doug is unable to look at his daughter as anything other than as a sexy chick, and he spends his time fending off packs of horny suitors while dictating morality to Katie. It finally gets to the point where Doug consults with television psychiatrist Dr. Fishbinder (Wallace Shawn), who recommends that Doug read a book he has written for single fathers, advising him, "If you're a slow reader, you better put your daughter on the pill." ~ Paul Brenner, All Movie Guide

Most helpful customer reviews   Classic Teen Movie!, Oct 29 2002 By  Gianna (Manhattan Beach, CA USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: She's Out of Control (VHS Tape) Keeping in mind that this is not Shakespeare, Chekov, or Ibsen here... it's a great movie! Every teenage girl should see this movie -- yes, it is a bit "old" by today's standards, but the plot is still great. When Katie blooms into this glamorous, teen vixen overnight (with the help of her dad's girlfriend) her overprotective father is baffled and disapproving. When she first came walking down the staircase, backlit in that white eyelet dress and Frankie Avalon comes on in the background... I wanted to be that girl! Any twelve year old can appreciate this movie ;) So... if you like lighthearted movies, this is a fun coming of age story that's worth a viewing. Was this review helpful to you? And yet, he claimed that this film so disgusted him that he nearly gave up film criticism! I don't blame him. The film is awful, and actually has a creepiness to it in the way Danza views his daughter. The true shame is that some good and likable actors - Catherine Hicks, Ami Dolenz, even Tony Danza - were wasted in this piece of [work]. Was this review helpful to you? It can help to break the ice about a lot of topics in a fun way. It is fun for the kids to watch by themselves, and bears watching over and over again. There is something for everyone. It is well-paced, and rich in the soundtrack of the sixties, since Dad is a DJ. Wallace Shawn is priceless as the know-it-all Psychiatrist specializing in adolescents. Catherine Hicks' (Dad's girlfriend) is very effective (and very feminine) as she tansforms the ugly duckling fifteen year-old Ami Dolenz (yes, Mickey's daughter) into something her father will never recognize.
