Copperfield Document Part of "Extortion Attempt"

David Copperfield's lawyers have dismissed a document outlining how his assistants were to gather women he found attractive at his shows - insisting the illusionist is the victim of a blackmail attempt. According to the document, titled Show Participation, Copperfield's employees had to gather a clipboard, a camera and brochures of his islands in the Bahamas when they went out to find good-looking women - and impress them with promises of work. The paperwork advised the assistants to try and encourage the women to go backstage to meet Copperfield. But the magician's lawyer, David Handoff, claims the document is made-up and is part of a recent extortion attempt against the magician. He tells website Tmz.com, "Recently, Mr. Copperfield was the victim of an unsuccessful extortion attempt by a disgruntled former employee. We believe these documents are a smear campaign which is a product of that unsuccessful shakedown effort. The distorted and twisted claim that these meet and greets were designed as a dating service for Mr. Copperfield is ridiculous. In fact, thousands of audience participants were greeted in this fashion. The innuendo that voluntary meetings with audience members has anything to do with forced, non-consensual activity is both untrue and unfair." Copperfield is currently under investigation for allegedly raping a Seattle, Washington woman in the Bahamas. His lawyer insists his client will be found innocent of the rape charges against him.

De Mornay Arrested for Drunk-Driving

Actress Rebecca De Mornay was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence during a routine traffic stop last week. Tom Cruise's Risky Business co-star was pulled over in Beverly Hills, California on October 30 for an unknown traffic violation. Police claim officers "immediately detected an odor of alcoholic beverages" and that De Mornay failed a number of on-the-spot sobriety tests before she was arrested. The 48-year-old John From Cincinnati star was cited for a blood alcohol level of .09 and was released from Beverly Hills police station two hours later.

Judge Orders Spears To Pay Federline's Legal Bill

Britney Spears has been ordered to pay $120,000 to cover her ex-husband Kevin Federline's legal bills in the couple's ongoing child custody battle. Los Angeles Superior Court Commissioner Scott Gordon considered Federline's original request for $160,000 before ruling the singer must pay $120,000 immediately. Commissioner Gordon took into consideration the "disparity between the parties' incomes" and that "the vast majority of the litigation deals with (Spears') conduct." In court documents released last week, it was revealed that Spears earns as much as $720,000 per month. Spears is fighting Federline for custody of their sons Sean Preston, two, and Jayden James, one. She currently has visitation rights to see her boys three times a week. The former couple's next custody hearing is set for November 26.

Affleck Impressed by Amy Ryan

Director Ben Affleck was so impressed by actress Amy Ryan, he hired her on the spot following her audition for Gone Baby Gone. And Affleck was so excited at the emergence of the new talent, he begged her not to turn down the role. He says, "I think Amy is brilliant and I'm really glad to see that people will get to see more of her. And I just lucked out that she walked into the room. She read one scene in the audition and I like stopped and said, 'You're hired. Please do the movie.'" Ryan's performance in the film as a drug addicted mother has already been tipped for an Academy Award nomination.

Rosanne Cash To Have Brain Surgery

Country legend Johnny Cash's daughter Rosanne Cash is to undergo brain surgery in New York to treat a rare but benign condition. The Grammy-winning singer/songwriter has not revealed exactly what illness she is suffering from, but will have the operation at the New York Presbyterian Hospital as soon as possible. As a result of the condition, she has cancelled the remaining four live U.S. dates scheduled for later this month, which were to support the recent release of her Black Cadillac album. But the 52-year-old star plans to be back at work early next year. A posting on her official website says, "Rosanne is expected to make a full recovery and will return to the studio to complete the recording of her debut for Manhattan Records. Ms. Cash will also resume her live performance schedule in the spring and will complete a new book to be published by Viking in early 2009." The critically acclaimed singer is the daughter of Johnny Cash and his first wife Vivian, and the eldest of the late icon's five children.

Shyamalan Can Keep Deer Fence

Signs filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan can keep an eight-foot tall deer fence erected around his Philadelphia, Pennsylvania property, a judge has ruled. The Sixth Sense director's mesh fence has angered his suburban neighbors, who insist it's ugly, ruins their views and has an adverse effect on property values. But on Friday, Chester County Judge Robert J. Shenkin ruled the perimeter fence can stay, which Shyamalan has argued is necessary to prevent deer from destroying planned formal gardens. Judge Shenkin's decision is the second ruling to defeat locals' objections to the fence.
