Competition Will be Stiff for New Releases With 'Jumanji' Set to Remain #1

Competition Will be Stiff for New Releases With 'Jumanji' Set to Remain #1
This weekend sees Warner Bros.'s 12 Strong and STX's R-rated heist thriller Den of Thieves hitting theaters, both of which are targeting male audiences, which means they'll also have to contend with the NFL conference championship games this Sunday. Additionally, a couple of notable expansions are taking place this weekend along with Roadside's moderate release of Forever My Girl. That being said, all appear as if they'll be settling in behind last weekend's #1 and #2 films, as Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and The Post are expected to hold on to those top two spots. Jumanji topped last weekend's box office after dropping just 24.5%, and this weekend it should continue to hold on rather well. While we're currently anticipating a drop around 32% and a fifth weekend around $19 million, don't be surprised if it hangs on a little better than that. The film should top $315 million domestically by end of day Sunday,

Veteran British Actor Peter Wyngarde Dies at 90

Veteran British Actor Peter Wyngarde Dies at 90
Veteran actor Peter Wyngarde, who starred as flamboyant investigator Jason King in the iconic 1970s British police series “Department S,” has died. He was 90.

Wyngarde died in a West London hospital, his agent Thomas Bowington told Variety.

“Peter Wyngarde passed away peacefully in his sleep early evening Monday at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital,” Bowington said, adding that Wyngarde was “one of the most original and truly great actors I’ve ever seen and by far the most exceptional man I have ever met.”

Wyngarde had a long career on stage and screen but is best known as handlebar-mustachioed investigator King. He also appeared in classic series including “The Avengers,” “The Saint,” and “The Prisoner.”

The King character was an author and investigator in “Department S,” and in 1971 was given his own series, “Jason King.” The show was canceled in 1972, but Wyngarde continued to appear on stage and screen in Britain and internationally.

Box Office Preview: '12 Strong' To Challenge 'Jumanji's' Reign
As the family-friendly fantasy film Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle attempts to hang on to the top spot at the domestic box office for the third weekend in a row, it is facing off against a challenge from 12 Strong, which follows a Special Forces team into battle in Afghanistan in the wake of 9/11. Both films could take in about $15 million or more before the dust settles.

So far, Sony’s Jumanji has proven to be unexpectedly resilient. In both its third and fourth weekends it fell by just 25 percent during each frame. The fall-off is expected to...

Dylan Farrow Details Sexual Assault Allegation Against Woody Allen in Emotional Interview

Dylan Farrow Details Sexual Assault Allegation Against Woody Allen in Emotional Interview
Dylan Farrow detailed her allegations of sexual assault at the hands of her father, Woody Allen, in a lengthy interview with Gayle King that aired on Thursday’s edition of “CBS This Morning.”

Farrow, 32, recounted her story of being touched by Allen, her adoptive father, in August 1992. She also said she experienced other incidents of inappropriate behavior with her father, including him asking her to come into bed with him when he was wearing only underwear. Allen has once again strongly denied the allegations.

Farrow said she decided to give her first TV interview on the alleged assault that occurred when she was 7 because of the groundswell of public support for victims of sexual harassment and abuse. She has called on actors to shun Allen and his films.

“It was very momentous for me to see this conversation finally carried into a public setting,” Farrow said of the Time’s Up and #MeToo movements. “Because I have

EuropaCorp Being Circled By Potential Buyers, Investors (Exclusive)

EuropaCorp Being Circled By Potential Buyers, Investors (Exclusive)
Luc Besson’s EuropaCorp is being circled by potential buyers and investors as it struggles to climb out from under a mountain of debt. Among the suitors, sources say, is business tycoon Tarak Ben Ammar, a shareholder in The Weinstein Co. and a board member of Vivendi.

Hit by the disappointing performance of last year’s “Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets,” EuropaCorp has directed its primary lender, JP Morgan, to find someone who can inject equity capital into the company, as well restructure and pay a portion of its debt. Several well-informed sources tell Variety that the company urgently needs to find a solid partner by March 30, which marks the end of its financial year. The company’s market capitalization fell to €57.4 million ($70.2 million) as of Thursday, while losses reached €119.9 million ($146.8 million) and its net debt skyrocketed to €230 million ($281.6 million) as of September.

JP Morgan currently holds EuropaCorp’s assets, including its valuable

10 Things We Learned at the Television Critics Assn. Press Tour

The Television Critics Association winter press tour is officially in the record books. The broadcast and cable networks — and even a few streamers — did their annual dog-and-pony (well, there was a sheep) show for the TV critics press corps, presenting their strategies for the coming season.

Amid the swirl of puppies, “prestige popcorn,” and promotional swag, here are the major takeaways.

1. It’s “business as usual” at Fox and Disney

It’s going to be “business as usual” during the next year to 18 months, during which the Fox-Disney deal is expected to close. While Fox executives Dana Walden and Gary Newman admitted they are going to have decisions to make down the line, right now they said they both remain committed to the work they are doing with Fox Television Group. This includes prepping for the upcoming pilot season and rolling out the rest of their midseason launches, including “The Resident.” However, Newman

Sundance: Robert Redford Calls #MeToo and Time's Up Movements
As the 2018 Sundance Film Festival got underway today in Park City, Utah, Robert Redford hailed the #MeToo movement and the Time’s Up initiative that are forcing Hollywood, both in the mainstream and indie film worlds, to confront gender inequality and sexual harassment.

“It’s kind of a tipping point,” Redford said. “It’s changing the order of things so that women will have a stronger voice. They didn’t have it before. Too much control by the male dominance. Now I think it’s going to be more even-handed. I think the role for women to be able to step forward and exercise...
