Simon Brew Nov 21, 2017

Channing Tatum looks set to be joined by Lizzy Caplan in the long-mooted X-Men spin-off, Gambit...

There are fresh signs of life in the X-Men spin-off Gambit, that for a long time has had Channing Tatum attached in the lead role. More recently, Gore Verbinski has joined the project as the latest director to try and get it over the line, and it appears as though he’s having some success. The film is now moving ahead with its casting, and looks to have found its female lead.

Lizzy Caplan is in talks for the role, although details of just what that role is haven’t been released. The best guess thus far is it’s the part of Bella Donna Boudreax, leader of the guild of assassins. That's not been confirmed, though.

The film is currently due in cinemas in February of 2019. Expect filming to begin early next year.

Review: Paddington 2 (2017)

Isn’t it amazing how expectations can change so quickly and colossally? Back when Paddington was scheduled to hit cinemas in 2014, it was the subject of much concern for a great number of audiences. A CG/Live-Action adaptation of the beloved books by the late great Michael Bond, the film frighteningly had people expecting another Garfield: The Movie, Yogi Bear or The Smurfs. Pre-release the film was blitzed by cynicism and negativity, from rumours surrounding Colin Firth leaving the project, to the first photo of Paddington being deemed creepy and curiously inspiring an online trend of editing poor old Paddington into classic horror movies. Such a tidal wave of pessimism though was met with a wave breaker of charm, as Paddington shocked audiences by being not only good but a magical, masterful, family film with lots to say about acceptance, goodwill and finding a place you can call a home.

Lizzy Caplan Lands Mystery Role In Fox’s Gambit Spinoff

Remy LeBeau is inching ever closer to his big-screen debut.

Variety is reporting today that Lizzy Caplan (Masters of Sex) has signed on to play the female lead in Gambit. She’ll join Channing Tatum for Fox’s X-Men spinoff, though details of her role are practically non-existent this early in the game.

20th Century Fox refused to comment at the time of Variety’s scoop, but that hasn’t stopped curious fans from linking Caplan’s casting with the seemingly vacant role of Bella Donna. Prior to Gambit‘s well-documented production woes – both Doug Liman and Rupert Wyatt had flirted with the spinoff, before Fox ultimately handed the keys over to Gore Verbinski – rumors began to circulate that Léa Seydoux (Spectre) had been offered the part.

Alas, those tentative plans unraveled soon after Gambit was hit with one setback after another, though a recent casting call has meant that

Rumour: Candra will be a villain in the Gambit movie

Now that 20th Century Fox’s Gambit movie seems to be finally moving forward – with a February 2019 release date set and a director on board in Gore Verbinski – we should hopefully get some official news on the X-Men spinoff soon.

However, in the meantime, we’re left with rumours, and the folks at Omega Underground have one concerning a potential villain the movie, with the site reporting that the character of Candra is set to feature in the film, and that the telepathic supervillain will be involved with both the Thieves Guild (Gambit) and the Assassins Guild (Bella Donna).

Candra was created by Howard Mackie and Lee Weeks, and made her first appearance in Gambit #1 in 1993. In the comic books, she is also a member of the immortal group known as The Externals, and the site speculates that Candra and the Externals could be being set up for future use,

Is X-Men Villain Candra Set To Feature In Gambit?

Now that X-Men spinoff movie Gambit has finally been confirmed as moving forward, with Channing Tatum in the titular role, speculation is beginning to swirl around the identity of the villain of the piece. While there are a number of possibilities – including Mister Sinister, whose presence was teased at the end of X-Men: Apocalypse – hopes are building that the movie might provide the big screen debut of Gambit arch-enemy, Candra.

With female villainy being brought front and centre by the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe outing Thor: Ragnarok, it’s not beyond the realm of possibility that 20th Century Fox might take that superhero lead and embrace a primary antagonist that’s also a woman. Doing so in this case would deliver a character who would make her debut alongside a new version of the card-throwing mutant – and rightly so.

Candra is a telekinetic, immortal External (a rare sub-species of mutant,

Gambit Movie Getting Candra as Main Villain?

  • MovieWeb
20th Century Fox's Gambit is finally moving forward after the studio set the Gambit release date for February 14, 2019, roughly the same release frame that the record-breaking Deadpool was released in last year. With production starting at some point next year, a new rumor has surfaced, claiming that the X-Men villain Candra The Benefactress a.k.a. Red Death, will be featured in the Gambit movie, although that has not been confirmed by anyone at the studio. It's possible that the inclusion of Candra can lead to the introduction of a group known as The Externals in the studio's X-Men universe.

In the X-Men comics, Candra the Benefactress was a telepathic villain who control two different superhero guilds based in New Orleans, Thieves Guild, which Remy LeBeau/Gambit (Channing Tatum) belongs to, and the Assassin's Guild, which Bella Donna belongs to. Candra grants members of both guilds their powers via her own telepathic powers.

New Report Says That Gambit Will Be A Crime/Heist Film

We still can’t quite believe the Gambit solo film might actually get made. Channing Tatum was chosen for the role way back in the mid 2000s, but had to duck out of X-Men Origins: Wolverine to appear in G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra (talk about being stuck between a rock and a hard place), with Taylor Kitsch taking the part instead. Which was, at the time, a three-picture deal to play the character.

Well, we all know what happened there. But you can’t keep a good mutant down, with the Gambit project then spending years floating between various directors, with Rupert Wyatt and Doug Liman coming very close to actually making it to production. Now, finally, it looks as if Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski is to take the reins and finally, finally, get this thing out of the gates.

Just this week, it was

X-Men spinoff Gambit gets a Valentine’s Day 2019 release date

With Fox’s X-Men franchise branching out its universe with spin-offs such as Deadpool and The New Mutants, one film that has been frequently delayed since it was first announced is Gambit, with Channing Tatum starring as the Cajun mutant. Now, however, 20th Century Fox has finalized a release date for the film. Following Deadpool‘s ‘romantic’ lead, Gambit will be released on February 14th, 2019.

It was reported just a few days ago that Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski was in talks for Gambit with the studio potentially eyeing Daniel Craig for the role of the villain Mister Sinister. Gambit was previously set to be directed Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) and Doug Liman (Edge of Tomorrow), but they both left the project due to “creative differences”.

While the plot is unknown, Gambit has been described as “the Ocean’s 11 of the comic book

Channing Tatum's Gambit Gets New 2019 Release Date

  • MovieWeb
After years of delays, it seems 20th Century Fox is finally getting ready to pull the trigger on Gambit, with the studio setting a February 14, 2019 release date. As of now, the only other movies slated for release on that date are Warner Bros.' Isn't It Romantic, starring Priyanka Chopra and Liam Hemsworth, and an untitled Blumhouse horror project for Universal Pictures. The studio hasn't released a production schedule for this superhero adaptation, but this release date falls in line with a report from February, which claimed that Gambit starts filming at some point in 2018.

It's possible that 20th Century Fox is trying to replicate the success of their R-rated superhero movie Deadpool, which also opened on Valentine's Day weekend in 2016, shattering box office records for highest R-rated opening weekend ($132.4 million) and highest-grossing R-rated movie worldwide ($783.1 million). It helps that there isn't much competition on this particular weekend, and it's
