Beer, Wagner, a red Jaguar, and Barrington Pheloung’s haunting theme. Those images conjure up one of the most memorable characters in British television. Inspector Morse’s final episode aired in the UK over fifteen years ago, yet the impression left by the hugely popular drama remains indelible. Its popular spinoff, Lewis, finished only two years ago after nine successful series, while a prequel, Endeavour, has just started to air its fourth run. The appeal of Morse and his Oxford is clearly as strong as ever.

Oscar-Nominated Film Series: Dazzling-Looking Russian Revolution Epic Much Too Old-Fashioned

'Nicholas and Alexandra': Movie starred Michael Jayston and Janet Suzman 'Nicholas and Alexandra' movie review: Opulent 1971 spectacle lacks emotional core Nicholas and Alexandra is surely one of the most sumptuous film productions ever made. The elaborate sets and costumes, Richard Rodney Bennett's lush musical score, and frequent David Lean collaborator Freddie Young's richly textured cinematography provide the perfect period atmosphere for this historical epic. Missing, however, is a screenplay that offers dialogue instead of speeches, and a directorial hand that brings out emotional truth instead of soapy melodrama. Nicholas and Alexandra begins when, after several unsuccessful attempts, Tsar Nicholas II (Michael Jayston) finally becomes the father of a boy. Shortly thereafter, he and his wife, the German-born Empress Alexandra (Janet Suzman), have their happiness crushed when they discover that their infant son is a hemophiliac. In addition to his familial turmoil, the Tsar must also deal with popular

DVD Review – How to Get Ahead in Advertising (1989)

How to Get Ahead in Advertising, 1989.

Written and Directed by Bruce Robinson.

Starring Richard E.Grant, Rachel Ward, Richard Wilson, John Shrapnel and Tony Slattery.

Synopsis:

A young advertising executive is overcome with stress when attempting to develop a new campaign for a brand of pimple cream. His extreme anxiety eventually leads to a boil growth on his shoulder that begins to talk and act…

A unique selling point (Usp) is, as those in the know will constantly tell you, essential in the world of marketing and advertising. Occasionally this dread inducing marketing speak can be applied to cinema and filmmaking as well. In the case of Bruce Robinson and Richard E Grant’s follow up to the redoubtable Withnail & I, the Usp (released here in a restored DVD/Blu-ray dual format edition) here is the continued strident and frenetic form of darkly tinctured slapstick that has more than a few f-yous to modern society.
