German Blockbuster Comedy ‘Fack Ju Goehte 3’ Picked Up by Picture Tree (Exclusive)

Berlin-based Picture Tree Intl. has picked up international sales rights to blockbuster high school comedy “Fack Ju Goehte 3,” which opened with €15.4 million ($18 million) in Germany, Austria and Switzerland – the best start for a movie this year in the German-language territories.

Picture Tree also handled world sales on the first two movies in the franchise, which were both the top-grossing films of their year in Germany. The films have struck a nerve with moviegoers, particularly younger fans, with their mix of politically incorrect, laugh-out-loud comedy and burning social issues such as poor education, bullying and immigration.

Like the first two movies, the latest installment from writer-director Bora Dagtekin centers on cynical ex-con-turned-teacher Zeki Mueller, played again by Elyas M’Barek. In this film he tries to make sure his rowdy students pass final exams while facing the possible closure of his school because of its disastrous conditions.

The original “Fack Ju Goehte” earned nearly €54 million ($62.6 million) at the

Homegrown German Films Makes Global Showing

Homegrown German Films Makes Global Showing
While German-language films screening at this year’s Cannes Film Festival are scant in number, German talent and market titles nevertheless offer a glimpse of current and upcoming productions, ranging in subject matter from prehistoric adventure and Nazi-era intrigue to modern day terrorism and romance in the face of sorrow.

This year’s crop of local productions follows a standout year for German films, which not only made an impressive showing on the international festival circuit but also at both the domestic and international box office. Maren Ade’s Oscar-nominated “Toni Erdmann,” a bittersweet comedy about an aging father trying to reconnect with his distant, workaholic daughter, enjoyed a stellar year, winning a slew of international prizes, including five European Film Awards, sweeping this year’s German Film Awards, and leading to Ade’s selection for this year’s Cannes competition jury.

Domestically, the refugee crisis was the focus of

Amazon Prime Video’s Global Launch Looks Soft, but It’s Just a First Step

Amazon Prime Video’s Global Launch Looks Soft, but It’s Just a First Step
Amazon’s sudden recent rollout of its Prime Video service in more than 200 territories, in tandem with the global availability of its new series “The Grand Tour,” clearly announced the company’s intention to take on Netflix as ruler of the video-streaming world.

Yet what’s equally clear is that Amazon has some way to go in terms of tailoring Prime to local tastes and maximizing its appeal. Indeed, in some ways, the Dec. 14 global rollout almost seemed like a soft launch.

In several countries looked at by Variety, the company hasn’t even bothered to translate the PrimeVideo.com website’s interface from English into the local language. And its content offerings seem scant and lacking in local flavor.

In the United Arab Emirates, for example, the new streaming service offers original shows produced by Amazon Studios, including “Transparent” and “The Man in the High Castle,” plus a few other licensed series like “Seinfeld” and “Community

Amazon Prime Boards First German Movie ‘Bullyparade’

Berlin — Amazon has acquired Warner Bros.’ upcoming comedy feature “Bullyparade — Der Film” from German multihyphenate funnyman Michael Bully Herbig.

Based on Herbig’s cult TV comedy show that ran on German TV broadcaster ProSieben from 2001 to 2002, the pic will premiere on the premium Amazon Prime subscription VOD service six months after its theatrical run, Amazon said Thursday.

Following his hit TV show, Herbig went on to make German cinematic history with such megahits as 2001’s comedy-western “Der Schuh des Manitu” and 2004’s “(T)Raumschiff Surprise — Periode 1” — two of the highest-earning German films of all time.

Herbig’s “Bullyparade” co-stars Rick Kavanian and Christian Tramitz will also return for the big-screen treatment. Herbig will direct from a script he co-wrote with Kavanian, Tramitz and Alfons Biedermann. His herbX film is co-producing with Warner Bros. Film Productions Germany, with principal photography set to begin this month.

“We’re thrilled that it’s starting again,

As part of their collaboration, the co-production between Herbig’s Munich-based herbX Film and Warner Bros. Film Productions Germany will receive its exclusive small screen premiere on the streaming service six months after its 2017 theatrical opening by Warner Bros. and before its release on DVD and other outlets.

“Our customers love German series and films,” said Amazon Video Germany MD Christoph Schneider. “The cooperation with Michael Bully Herbig and Warner Bros. is our next step to further expand our commitment to German films and series and make them available exclusively to our customers.”

Deutschland 83 opens the floodgate for a German TV renaissance

The success of the cold-war thriller outside its home country has inspired Amazon, Netflix and Sky to commission German-language shows

It might not have been a hit in its home nation, but Deutschland 83’s success abroad is leading TV executives to bet big on German drama.

Streaming giant Amazon has announced its first German-language series, The Wanted, starring Matthias Schweighöfer as a man whose life is upended after a hacking attack. Netflix is working on an as-yet untitled series in conjunction with the team behind Oscar-winning Stasi drama The Lives of Others, according to Variety. And, never one to be left behind, Sky is creating a 1920s crime drama entitled Babylon Berlin with German public-broadcaster Ard, to be directed by Tom Tykwer of Run Lola Run fame. An adaptation of Volker Kutscher’s bestselling novels about a young detective in Berlin, it is set to start filming in April,

Picture Tree Boards Matthias Schweighoefer Comedy ‘The Most Beautiful Day’ (Exclusive)
London — Berlin-based sales company Picture Tree Intl. has picked up road-movie comedy “The Most Beautiful Day,” which toplines Matthias Schweighoefer, one of Germany’s biggest film stars. The movie will make its market premiere on Feb. 12 at Berlin’s European Film Market.

The film, which Florian David Fitz directs and co-stars in, will be released in Germany by Warner Bros. Hopes are high that it’ll follow the path set by other recent German comedies, such as “Fack Ju Goehte 2,” which have crossed-over into the mainstream and become box-office hits, as well as selling widely abroad.

The pic centers on quirky, overambitious pianist Andi and the happy-go-lucky, laid-back Benno. They have just one thing in common: both are diagnosed with a fatal disease. With their end seemingly around the corner, Benno convinces Andi to escape the dead-end hospice and to go on a road trip in search of their last and most awesome day.
