'Tsk' Vs 'Sketch': Which of the five Pongal releases will win the race?

KollywoodThe big clash will be between Suriya and Vikram releases but there are other players, too.Tnm StaffThe Pongal weekend is a much coveted release date for Tamil films. The long holiday and the accompanying festivities usually ensure good footfalls in cinema theatres in the state. Being the first festival of the year, the box-office tends to be rather crowded. 2018 is no different - in fact, this year, as many as five films are all set to hit the screens. A few weeks ago, the number was as high as eight but three filmmakers have backed out of the race sensibly. Vishal and Arjun's Irumbuthirai is among the films which have postponed the release date. The biggest clash will be between Suriya's Thaana Serndha Koottam and Vikram's Sketch. The others in the race include Prabhu Deva's Gulebagavali, Aravind Swamy's Bhaskar Oru Rascal and Vijaykanth's son, Shanmugapandian's Madura Veeran. Writing for Firstpost, film critic and trade analyst Sreedhar Pillai says Tamil Nadu has 1,100 screens, of which only 800-900 are equipped to screen new films. Most of the screens, he says, will go to Suriya and Vikram films. Tsk Suriya's Thaana Serndha Koottam is the Tamil remake of Akshay Kumar's Special 26 which released in 2013. The film starred Kajal Aggarwal, Manoj Bajpayee, and Anupam Kher. Tsk has a good buzz around it and was even the golden tweet of the year till the Virushka wedding took away the honour. Directed by Vignesh Shivn, the film also stars Keerthy Suresh, Karthik and Ramya Krishna. Special 26 had enough comedy and intrigue built into the story. If Tsk is a faithful remake, chances are that it will hook the family audience. The original was a big hit and is a tried and tested storyline. The Tamil audience has increasingly opened up to thrillers with strong storytelling and the film is likely to score big if it has been done well. Sketch Directed by Vijay Chander, this Vikram-Tamannaah starrer is among the most anticipated releases of this year. From the teaser, it appears that Vikram is playing a rowdy in the film, a character he played to huge reception in Gemini. The film is also releasing big in Kerala, the distribution rights having been acquired by Maxlab Cinemas and Entertainments, which is co-owned by veteran producer Antony Perumbavoor. Vikram hasn't had a release in 2017. His last film was Irumugan and the break from the big screen has made his fans all the more eager to watch Sketch. The film is likely to give Tsk tough competition at the box-office if it receives good reviews. Gulebaghavali This Prabhudeva-Hansika film, directed by Kalyaan may prove to be a winner at the box office, considering it's a comedy which is likely to attract family audiences during the Pongal festival. The film has been produced by Kjr Studios which created a sensation with Gopi Nainar's Aramm towards the end of 2017. The film also stars Revathi, Ramdoss, and Yogi Babu. Prabhudeva is known for comedy films like Kaathala Kaathala and the actor still has a wide fanbase. If Gulebaghavali is the laugh riot its makers have been promising, it may end up getting more screens - provided, it holds up against the two big releases in its opening weekend. Bhaskar Oru Rascal The Tamil remake of the Malayalam film Bhaskar the Rascal, this film directed by Siddique stars Aravind Swamy and Amala Paul. The original starred Mammootty and Nayanthara in lead roles. Aravind Swamy is known for his intelligent script selection. The original film was a blockbuster which ran for 100 days in Kerala. The film is about a greedy businessman. Nayanthara played a single parent in the Malayalam film and Amala Paul is likely to reprise the role. Bhaskar Oru Rascal has a good buzz around it and the filmmakers have taken a risk, releasing it with Tsk and Sketch. Whether the gamble will pay off is another question. However, both Aravind Swamy and Amala Paul are strong performers and the film may stay ahead in the race, if it gets enough good word of mouth. Madura Veeran The directorial debut of cinematographer PG Muthiah, this film has Shanmugapandian in the lead role. Samuthirakani is also part of the cast. It remains to be seen how many screens this film, which does not have big stars in the cast, will manage to get. The film's trailer was launched by actor Sivakarthikeyan on January 1 and it managed to get eyeballs on social media. However, there isn't much buzz around it otherwise.

Netflix’s ‘The Indian Detective’ Elevates Russell Peters, And His Comedic Take on Identity, Beyond Stand-up Into Stardom
Identity is a prevalent theme in Russell Peters’ stand-up, and it also serves as the launch pad for the laughs in “The Indian Detective,” his new four-episode series now streaming on Netflix.

“Identity comedy is universal. I may be talking about my Indian parents, but I know that my ‘Indian’ parents are the same as everyone’s parents in some way — Greek, Italian, Arab, Chinese,” Peters said. “That’s what my audience is responding to. I’m also exploring race and culture, and a lot of people aren’t comfortable with that.”

In “The Indian Detective,” Peters stars as Toronto Police constable Doug D’Mello, a man desperate to prove his salt and be promoted to detective, but instead winds up suspended following a bust gone wrong. Through a guilty ploy by his father (Anupam Kher), he heads to Mumbai during his repose where a pretty girl (Mishqah Parthiephal) leads

Manoj Bajpayee: “Aiyaary one of my best films”

Actor Manoj Bajpayee, who is all excited over his forthcoming Aiyaary, says that it is definitely going to be one of the best films of his career.

Present at the trailer launch of Aiyaary in Mumbai earlier this week, Manoj, asked to share his experience of working with Neeraj Pandey with whom he has done films like Special 26 and Baby, praised his director, saying he was sick during shooting, “but still he kept the team together and kept the spirit really high all the time”.

“It made the entire difficult task look so easy. We shot the film in different locations and they have their own challenges apart from our director not feeling well. But the result we saw during dubbing is amazing and I feel so proud of this film. This is definitely going to be one of the best film of my career,” said Manoj.

Suriya’s 'Tsk' not a scene by scene remake of 'Special 26', director clarifies

EntertainmentOnly the core theme of the film has been retained while the rest has been changed to suit the nativity of the audiences, the director said. Digital Native thaana-serndha-koottam.jpgDigital NativeThere have been reports doing the rounds that the Suriya starrer Thaana Serntha Kootam is the remake of the Bollywood blockbuster hit movie Special 26. However, the film is not being promoted as the remake which was creating a confusion among the film buffs. Well, its director Vignesh Shivan has put an end to all the rumours with a clarification. While agreeing that the producers of Tsk had bought the remake rights of Special 26, the director revealed that it is not an exact remake. Only the core theme of the film has been retained while the rest has been changed to suit the nativity of the audiences, he is reported to have said during a recent media interaction.  Reports indicate that the producers of Tsk had purchased the remake rights to do away with the legal issues should they arise in the future and that is the reason behind the team not promoting it as a remake. Interestingly, Tsk will be released in both Tamil as well as Telugu simultaneously on January 12 for Sankaranthi next year. The film is produced by Ke Gnanavelraja under his banner Studio Green. The Telugu version is titled as Gang. Starring Suriya and Keerthy Suresh as the lead pair, the film has veteran actor Karthik in a pivotal role. It also has Suresh Chandra Menon, Sudhakar, Ramya Krishnan, Senthil, Sathyan, Shivashankar, Kalaiyarasan, Nandha, Rj Balaji, Anandaraj and Brahmanandam in the star cast. Anirudh has composed the tunes for this flick with Dinesh Krishnan being the cinematographer and Sreekar Prasad editing it. ‘The Indian Detective’ Review: Netflix’s Wispy Comedy Makes an International Murder Plot Seem Like a Vacation

‘The Indian Detective’ Review: Netflix’s Wispy Comedy Makes an International Murder Plot Seem Like a Vacation
Eventually, “Warm Bath TV” as a philosophical guide will find favor in all of the biggest television subgenres. The desire to find something comforting on TV, even within the framework of a stressful setup, has helped make “The Good Doctor” one of the year’s runaway new hits.

Enter “The Indian Detective,” a Netflix/CTV joint distribution venture that brings that same philosophy to a serialized cop show. Against a syndicate-run plot that eventually claims its share of bodies, there’s an easiness to the way that Doug D’mello (Russell Peters) winds his way through the four-part story that sometimes makes for an enjoyable watch, but mostly hints at a better show with a different approach.

After a suspension following a highly public failed drug bust and an urgent phone call from his father‘s hometown of Mumbai, Doug flies to India to visit his ailing father Stanley (Anupam Kher

"Everyone is Nominated... but you!" Our annual SAG Ensemble Rules Exposé

by Nathaniel R

Betty Gabriel is not included in the Get Out ensemble nomination. For shame, SAG!The Film Experience started a tradition of exposing the Screen Actors Guild Awards unfortunate rules regarding ensemble nominations back in 2004. If you'd like a little history as to why we became advocates for change in this matter you can find the details at the bottom of the post. But for now let it suffice to say that SAG's rules for inclusion strike us as punitive for less famous actors and thus unbecoming given that they are a union and unions are ostensibly there to support the workers. The rule boils down to this: you need your own title card in a movie to be so honored - being on a shared title card or in the credits scroll won't do. With a new set of nominees for Outstanding Cast of a Motion Picture
