Critics Poll Puts 'History of Violence' on Top

David Cronenberg's A History of Violence, starring Viggo Mortensen and Maria Bello, has been named best film of 2005 in the Take Seven critics poll conducted by New York's The Village Voice. The survey of over 100 film critics writing for alternative weeklies, online publications and film journals, also named Cronenberg best director. Heath Ledger was named best performer for his work in Brokeback Mountain, while Noah Baumbach's The Squid and the Whale was voted best screenplay.
Brokeback Rides Off with More Critics' Awards

Brokeback Mountain continued to dominate the year-end critics' awards, winning Best Picture, Actor and Director from the New York Film Critics Circle, and two more honors from the National Board of the Review. The Ang Lee western was the dominant movie for the New York critics, scooping up awards for leading man Heath Ledger and director Lee in addition to Best Picture. Hot on its heels was David Cronenberg's A History of Violence, which nabbed both supporting honors, for William Hurt and Maria Bello; Reese Witherspoon was named Best Actress for her portrayal of June Carter Cash in Walk the Line. Other winners included The Squid and the Whale (Screenplay), 2046 (Foreign Language Film and Cinematography), and Capote (First Feature).
At the National Board of Review, Brokeback received two awards - Best Director and Best Supporting Actor for Jake Gyllenhaal - but was passed over for Best Picture, which went to Good Night, and Good Luck. Philip Seymour Hoffman, who's emerging as the favorite for Best Actor, won the group's lead award for Capote, while Emmy winner Felicity Huffman received the Best Actress award for Transamerica. Gong Li was the surprise Best Supporting Actress winner for Memoirs of a Geisha, and Terrence Howard of Hustle & Flow received another breakthrough performance award. Ensemble acting went to Mrs. Henderson Presents, and screenplay honors were given to The Squid and the Whale (original) and Syriana (adapted). The National Board of Review also named their top ten films of the year, listed below.

Rodriguez's All-Star Cast

Spy Kids director Robert Rodriguez is collecting an all-star cast for his new film and has so far targeted Leonardo DiCaprio, Bruce Willis, Elijah Wood, Brittany Murphy and Benicio Del Toro. Rodriguez has already signed up some of the stars for Sin City, whilst others - reportedly including Mickey Rourke, Kate Bosworth, Jamie King and Maria Bellow - are still in talks to appear. The film, which is due to start filming soon, is based on Frank Miller's dark graphic novel series.
Maria Bello's A Karaoke Addict

Maria Bello has become completely hooked on karaoke after starring in Bruce Paltrow's karaoke film Duets (2000). The blonde stunner, who sings through several scenes with co- stars Gwyneth Paltrow and Huey Lewis in the movie is now a total karaoke addict - and grabs a microphone every chance she gets. She says, "My friends and I have become completely addicted. Even last week, we had a party for a friend, 30 people in a backyard in Hollywood with a karaoke DJ singing till two in the morning."
