Movie Reviews: 'Elizabeth: The Golden Age'
12 October 2007 (StudioBriefing)
Critics are removing a bit of the sheen from Elizabeth: The Golden Age, starring Cate Blanchett in the title role, or as Manohla Dargis remarks in the New York Times, "as David Bowie in his Ziggy Stardust period." Dargis writes that the movie is "reductive, distorted and deliriously far-fetched, but the gowns are fabulous." Likewise, Joe Morgenstern comments in the Wall Street Journal,"When you see Cate Blanchett in one fantastical gown after another, you understand why Elizabeth's reign was golden." But that may be one of the problems of the film, Roger Ebert observes in the Chicago Sun-Times. The movie, he writes, "is weighed down by its splendor. There are scenes where the costumes are so sumptuous, the sets so vast, the music so insistent, that we lose sight of the humans behind the dazzle of the production." Still, Blanchett receives a polite round of applause from critics for her performance. As Carrie Rickey writes in the Philadelphia Inquirer: "Blanchett commands the screen as she commands the royal navy. Her unforced majesty makes a so-so film worth watching."

Gervais Plans To Axe 'Extras'
20 March 2007 (WENN)
Comedian Ricky Gervais will make a final Christmas special episode of TV hit Extras before axing the show, according to reports. The Emmy-winning creator of The Office is determined not to risk the failure of a poor third series, and would rather move onto new projects. After the success of The Office, Extras attracted a host of A-list celebrities desperate for cameo roles including David Bowie, Chris Martin and Ben Stiller. The insider tells British newspaper The Sun, "There had been reports that Ricky was going to go ahead with a third series of Extras. But he is firmly of the opinion that third series are rarely a success and has decided to quit while he's ahead. When he said goodbye to The Office with a two-part Christmas special, it was a smash hit both in the ratings and critically, so he's decided to do that again. He's loved making the series and there are tons more A-list stars who want to appear. But Ricky has lots of other things he wants to do and feels this is the right timing."

Boy, Oh Bowie! Whatta Goldmine!
1 October 1998 (StudioBriefing)
New York Times film critic Janet Maslin is waxing ecstatic today (Thursday) about Todd Haynes' Velvet Goldmine (1998), dealing with Britain's "glam rock" period of the '70s, starring Jonathan Rhys-Meyers as a virtual David Bowie look-alike. "Dazzlingly surreal, " Maslin calls the film, which debuts tonight at the 36th annual New York Film Festival. "Velvet Goldmine tells a story the way operas do, " she writes, "blazing with exquisite yet abstract passions, and with quite a lot to look at on the side." She lavishes praise on director Haynes ("stunning"), as well as on the three leads, Meyers, ("he embodies the provocative and mysterious heart of the film"), Ewan McGregor ("he makes a fabulously charismatic rock star") and Christian Bale (who appears "in one of the film's most exquisitely imaginative visions").

Where Are The Casablanca Writers?
14 May 1998 (StudioBriefing)
Screenwriting guru Robert McKee, whose seminars have been attended by the diverse likes of Lawrence Kasdan, William Goldman, Joel Schumacher, Keenan Ivory Wayans, David Bowie, John Cleese and Kirk Douglas, lashed out Wednesday at the quality of current film writing. Interviewed in Cannes by the London Times, McKee insisted that 95 percent of films produced today are mediocre and that classic works are being "cannibalized" when they fall into the hands of a hack adapter who is "likely to drag the genius down to his level." He also attacked Hollywood's current concentration on effects-laden spectacles and Europe's, on "painterly photography, " each of which sacrificed fundamental elements of drama, he claimed. McKee's first feature, based on Noel Coward's Hay Fever, is being promoted at Cannes.
