Murder On The Orient Express, Kenneth Branagh’s new film adaptation of the classic Agatha Christie mystery, offers a certain amount of lavish period style and mystery fun but does not measure up to the 1974 version, directed by Sidney Lumet and featuring an all-star cast. Branagh’s film also has a star-packed cast and Branagh, who plays detective Hercule Poirot as well as directs, sports an astonishing two-stage mustache that might be worth the ticket price alone.

Based on the famous Agatha Christie mystery featuring her Belgian detective, Hercule Poirot, the 1974 film version had an all-star cast with Albert Finney, Lauren Bacall, Martin Balsam,

Ingrid Bergman, Jacqueline Bisset, Sean Connery, John Gielgud, Wendy Hiller, Anthony Perkins,

Murder on the Orient Express movie review: strangers on a train

MaryAnn’s quick take… Doubly dated, lacking in humor and subtext, its impressive cast deliberately underutilized, this is little more than an exercise in gorgeous production design. I’m “biast” (pro): love the cast

I’m “biast” (con): saw no need for another production

I can’t recall if I’ve read the source material (I might have as a teenager in my classic-mystery phase, but if so, clearly it didn’t stick)

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)

Here’s the biggest mystery of director and star Kenneth Branagh’s opulent period mounting of the 1934 Agatha Christie novel: Why? Who was clamoring for yet another retelling of a story that has been told onscreen — both the big and small screens — several times already, and as recently as 2010 in the beloved television series starring David Suchet as Hercule Poirot? Why bother to tell this story

Emmy Weekend: Saturday Brunch With ICM Partners, Tea With BAFTA

Saturday is a leisurely day of Emmy weekend activities this time around.

NBCUniversal and Showtime are taking a year off from hosting large-scale parties. That clears the path for the Evening Before fundraiser in Century City benefitting the Motion Picture and Television Fund, which is always the weekend’s glitziest draw.

After a jam-packed Friday schedule, Emmy revelers got to sleep in a bit. Brunch was provided by ICM Partners, and there was tea in the afternoon courtesy of BAFTA Los Angeles.

ICM Partners

By noon, the backyard of the Santa Monica home of ICM honcho Chris Silbermann and producer Julia Franz was overflowing with good food and good conversation. The casual setting of the brunch was, as ever, a nice respite for the ears and throat from louder evening affairs.

Among those enjoying the spread and the sunshine were “Better Call Saul’s” Vince Gilligan and Thomas Schnauz, ABC’s Channing Dungey, Patrick Moran

From VHS to VOD #3

I don’t know if you’re anything like me, but I can often spend hours upon hours trawling through iTunes looking for new movies to buy… Usually I’ll randomly come across a title I haven’t seen in years and use the “Cast & Crew” links to make my way down the rabbit hole to the more obscure side of Apple’s digital movie service.

Now whilst many will decry that iTunes is a terrible VOD service due to Apple’s desire to lock its audience to their platforms, if you have an Apple TV or iPad be aware – there are some truly obscure films hidden away in the depths of the vast collection of movies. Some of which have been made available in the UK for the first time since VHS and a Lot that have been added to the service in their original uncut form!

Huston was 77, and suffering from emphysema for several years, when he returned to Mexico – the setting of both The Treasure of the Sierra Madre and The Night of the Iguana – to direct 28-year-old newcomer Guy Gallo's adaptation of English poet and novelist Malcolm Lowry's 1947 semi-autobiographical novel Under the Volcano, which until then had reportedly defied the screenwriting abilities of numerous professionals. Trailer for World Trade Center Drama '9/11' Directed by Martin Guigui

"I need you to try to get the hell out of that elevator." Atlas Distribution has premiered a trailer for a new drama titled 9/11, telling the story of five people trapped inside an elevator in the World Trade Center's North Tower on 9/11. They work together, never giving up hope, to try and find a way out safely. It's only been 16 years, but I guess we've reached a point where movies can literally use the 9/11 date as their title when telling a story centered around this horrific moment. The ensemble cast of this film includes Charlie Sheen, Whoopi Goldberg, Luis Guzman, Gina Gershon, Wood Harris, Jacqueline Bisset, Olga Fonda and Bruce Davison. It's directed by Martin Guigui, the same guy who made the unofficial Raging Bull sequel The Bronx Bull. The final shot in this trailer is totally crazy, and potentially a spoiler? Watch out. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster
