The Buzz: Having passed a litmus test with his appearance in Captain America: Civil War, it's clear that the movie-going universe is ready for Tom Holland as the new Peter Parker only three short years after Andrew Garfield's noble attempt at the role. The movie is riding a wave of warm and enthusiastic early reviews, a projected $100 million opening weekend in the U.S., and a sequel planned for July 5, 2019.

Certificate R   -   Drama | Fantasy | Romance

The Buzz: David Lowery reunites his Ain't Them Bodies Saints stars Casey Affleck and Rooney Mara for another challenging/potentially rewarding experience. This time it's a slow-burning thriller that compels you to give yourself over to the experience of a loss so haunting that it begins to physically manifest itself.

Certificate R   -   Documentary | War

86 Metascore
A documentary that follows the efforts of "Raqqa Is Being Slaughtered Silently," a handful of anonymous activists who banded together after their homeland was taken over by ISIS in 2014. With deeply personal access, this is the story of a brave group of citizen journalists as they face the realities of life undercover, on the run, and in exile, risking their lives to stand up against one of the greatest evils in the world today.

The Buzz: After taking us into the crossfire of the Mexican drug war with his Oscar-nominated documentary Cartel Land, filmmaker Matthew Heineman brought his camera into Syria for his follow-up, City of Ghosts. The film tells the story of Raqqa Is Being Slaughtered Silently, a group of civilian journalists and activists who risked their lives to report on the atrocities of the Syrian Civil War. Having premiered at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival to rave reviews, Heineman's film is being considered a definitive account of the conflict and one of the most important films of the year.

  -   Documentary | Mystery

66 Metascore

The Buzz: This true-crime documentary with Herzogian flourishes heads off the festival circuit and it appears likely to generate a new wave of momentum as it hits theaters and streaming, where this story of an idealistic couple who runs afoul of a crumbling but steadfast community in Northwestern Spain should provoke discussion.

The Buzz: For a moment there I thought comic relief in the form of Steve Zahn's character, Bad Ape, might derail what's proved to be one of the strongest movie trilogies ever made, but advanced reviews from a few friends who have seen Matt Reeves' final Apes installment agree with the journalists who have said that the picture deserves a Special Achievement Oscar.

Certificate PG-13   -   Fantasy | Horror | Thriller

30 Metascore
A teenage girl discovers a box that carries magic powers and a deadly price for using them.

The Buzz: The studio behind this horror movie is having myriad distribution issues so hopefully Joey King, who already survived The Conjuring, has one wish left in that evil octagon she was gifted. Barb from "Stranger Things" and Audrey from "Twin Peaks" help ramp up the mystery factor.

Certificate R   -   Comedy | Romance

The Buzz: Both director William Oldroyd and his star Florence Pugh have been earmarked as talent on the rise in what looks to be one of the most stark and sexy films of the season. It also features one of the best trailers of the year.

The Buzz: An entire movie studio's fate is resting on the shoulders of Luc Besson as he returns to space with a heroine, Laureline, he's loved longer than Leeloo. In the U.S., the promotional campaign for the movie has done an exceptional job making the movie feel like an event, though we think it will be the rest of the world that helps that Valerian qualify as a hit.

Certificate R   -   Comedy

72 Metascore
When four lifelong friends travel to New Orleans for the annual Essence Festival, sisterhoods are rekindled, wild sides are rediscovered, and there's enough dancing, drinking, brawling, and romancing to make the Big Easy blush.

The Buzz: A couple months ago it seemed like this summer would feature two hit comedies fronted by ensembles of funny women, then Rough Night bit it pretty hard at the box office, so perhaps Queen Latifah and company are feeling the pressure as they head to New Orleans for Essence Festival. Personally, Girls Trip always seemed like the better option; we'd rather hear Tiffany Haddish say "bootyhole" and down some cocktails 100 times more than a group of frantic friends trying to dispose of a dead stripper's body.

Certificate R   -   Comedy

65 Metascore
In 1995, a teenager living with her sister and parents in Manhattan discovers that her father is having an affair.

The Buzz: The Buzz: Gillian Robespierre re-teams with her Obvious Child star Jenny Slate for a 90s NYC comedy that feels both welcome, familiar, and long overdue. We had a great time with Gillian and her cast back at Sundance this year.

Certificate Unrated   -   Drama

63 Metascore

The Buzz: Really all we need is the sight of Catherine Deneuve smoking a cigarette, offering whisky, and saying lines such as, "You're getting prettier every day. But that raincoat has to go" and we're going to see the movie no matter what. But in the new movie from Martin Provost, Deneuve's on-screen majesty has a proper counterpart in Catherine Frot, as the two women reconnect after a 30-year separation. — Arno
